Space has been left to glue in book cover pieces.  Some titles are included in this educational download to get you started. Art loving learners could also draw in their own version of book covers, the author, or even a favorite scene from the book.

This is a very tangible and fun way to track reading progress for a variety of subjects like religion, science, history, or nature study.

Resource Run Down for the Liturgical Week Featuring St. Vincent de Paul, the Transcendent Trio and St. Jerome

Another busy liturgical week is here and we have lots to point out and share with our kiddos and yours too!  So, here is our liturgical run down for this week:

Tuesday, Sept.27 - Saint Vincent de Paul
Saint Vincent de Paul is the founder of the Congregation of the Missions (Vincentians) as well as the co-founder of the Daughters of Charity.  The son of a French peasant, he was ordained in 1600 and devoted his life to acts of charity.

Wednesday,  Sept. 28 - Saint Wenceslaus
You may have heard of St. Wenceslaus, King of Bohemia in the 10th century, from the Christmas carol written by John Mason Neale and published in 1853.  Wenceslaus was raised in the faith by his grandmother although his mother and brother were opposed to Christianity.  He intended on having his son take his thrown and rule with his strong beliefs in Christianity but his brother plotted against him and killed him in an ambush while the good king was on his way to Holy Mass. 

For a great learning activity:  go over the lyrics or sing the carol - which is usually sung on Dec.26th for the feast of St. Stephen, who is mentioned in the lyrics.  It gives us such a great insight into the heart of this noble saint. Thursday, Sept. 29 - The Transcendent Trio (Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel and Saint Raphael)
This special trio of arch angels are part of the group of seven archangels who stand before God.  They are recognized and venerated in both the Christian and Jewish Faith.  This special day was once called Michaelmas in honour of St. Michael, but now this day celebrates this well known trio who are well known to intercede and protect human beings on earth.

September 23rd is the Feast Day of St. Padre Pio. 
This modern day saint not only bore the sign of our Lord in the stigmata, but he also had the gift of reading hearts as well as could bilocate or be in two places at once.

Happy First Day of Fall

Fall is here!  Can you believe it? 

What are you doing to celebrate the first day of autumn with your kiddos?  Do you decorate your home in some way?  Perhaps you bake something with apples or cook with corn?  What are we going to do?

We are going on a nature walk!

Nature walks are a great way to explore both the big and little aspects of nature.  About a week ago one of our kiddos put in her bid for a nature walk to see how many leaves had already fallen or trees had begun changing their color around the neighborhood.  So, we will take a walk, bring home souvenirs, I am supposing, and mount them in our nature notebook.

 I like to use our bright little nature notebook sheets that have all kinds of different themes.  The pages are unlined to allow for mounting leaves, petals and any other treasures.  And, of course,  there is lots of space for drawings, doodles or photos.  You could even graph the type and numbers of leaves that you find.  We invite you to begin fall with a little nature loving fun too!

Spelling Advice From the Third Grader

One of the good things about having such willful children as I do, is that they are always very clear about what they want to learn and how they want to do it. 

My third grader is the artistic one in the family.  Everything must have color or be able to have color added to it in order to be meaning full.  She loves index cards and Our Learning Cards, but has the tendency to misplace them or lose them especially when she is studying outside under Annie, our big apple tree.  This is such a shame as she has painstakingly defined and illustrated her Latin vocab or spelling words with such vibrancy and color.  But fear not, she has a solution.


Here is the spelling advice from the third grader:

"Mom, I want to make a dictionary with my spelling words."  she said. 

"Okay, that's a great idea."  I replied.  "What should it look like?"

"I want to be able to write the word out, tell what it means, and draw a picture of it.  Can you put the
alphabet across the top so I can see what letter I'm on, too?" she asked.

"Sure," I said like a waitress taking an order.  "Do you want me to bind it up like a set?" I inquired.

"Nope.  I want it to go on the clipboard, then I can take it outside and sit under Annie and work on my words.  I'll just keep it in my binder.  Thanks, mom."  she said as she ran out to swing in her fruit-filled, pomander bearing friend.

And yes, that really IS how resources are born in our home.  Sometimes it's just a very clear idea from very willful minds.

So here are the pages to our Draw it, Write it spelling dictionary.  Feel free to use them for new words the kids are learning in any subject or just keep a master collection.  It is impossible for the words to be kept in alphabetical order within each letter as we hope the children are constantly adding to their collection.  A good rule of thumb is new words or often misspelled words should be added on a weekly basis.

What's a Homeschool Mom to Do?

So, you're in grade three and it's the first week of lessons. Mum hands you your new science book. You are excited by the cover, it looks really neat and bright. As you flip through the pages you like the opportunity for experiments, learning about space and animals, you like it all until . . . you see the all the new words you will need to learn for each chapter. Yikes!! The smile you once had now leaves your face. What's a homeschool mom to do?

This happened to me this past week - our second full week of lessons. My choices were to abandon the wonderful little catholic science book, bully or guilt my child into begrudgingly using the text, or come up with a creative solution. Since the first options weren't very viable at all, I decided to come up with a art filled solution...the Draw it, Write it Vocabulary Sheets. 

Available in four color themes, these sheets will help even your third grader bring stale vocab to life in ANY SUBJECT they are studying.  Whether it is a textbook, chapter book of sorts, or a longer read aloud, these sheets can help bring meaning and life to new words children encounter in their reading or learning.  Able to accompany up to fifteen chapters, this set allows children to write out, define and then illustrate new words they come across or need to learn. 


Each notebooking style sheet allows two words to be studied at a time and provides the chapter number, a visual numeral marker to make reference easier, plus generous line spacing and drawing area.  Print out as many pages of each chapter as necessary and bind to create a notebook.  Pages have been designed for use in a three ringed binder with enough space on either margin side to be a single side or double sided resource.

Our Lady and Astronomers

If you've ever watched the original Iron Chef series from Japan, (we love it even with subtitles,) then you know that exciting moment when the announcer says:  "The Iron Chef has four offerings today," and then we get to see what he has made.  Today I can be a bit like my favourite show and say, "Kalei has two resource offerings today!"

Shell from Thinking Love, No Twaddle has been such a busy little bee and has lots to share with us to pass on to other homeschooling families.

Our Lady

Our first offering today is a poetry lesson based on the poem, "Ballade to Our Lady of Czestochowa" by Hilaire Belloc.  This six page lesson includes the poem and additional notes on Hilaire Belloc, St. Hildagard of Bingen and Our Lady of Czestochowa.  Also included are two beautiful notebooking pages that would be beautiful to copy out the poem or write a bit about Our Lady, St. Hildagard or the author.

Astronomers

Our second resource is a Little Lesson on Father Pietro Angelo Secchi SJ, astronomer and sunspot spotter.  This is a seven page resource that highlights another Catholic scientist who lived from 1818-1878.  He made massive steps in forwarding our knowledge of the cosmos while serving as a shining example of steadfast devotion to the faith even in the eyes of political opposition to the church.  The lesson includes a packed text of info including a timeline of the author's life and accomplishments, discussion questions, notebooking sheet and a chance to have some hands-on simple, science fun.

Day Without Yesterday, Little Lesson on Msgr. Georges Lemaitre, Father of the Big Bang Theory

I love it when things work out this way.  I couldn't have planned it any better.  I posted our Famous Scientists learning cards yesterday and today I opened my inbox to find a great and solid Little Lesson on Monsignor Georges Lemaitre, Father of the Big Bang Theory from Shell, homeschool mum of six, over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog.

Some people have a way of making really hard things understandable.  Shell is one of those people.  She writes, creates and shares these wonderful lessons for homeschoolers.  She asks for nothing in return except for prayers for both our families.  And because of her effort, I now really know the history of the Big Bang Theory and the Catholic perspective on it.  You can even read the Vatican Document entitled, “Un Ora di Serenna” by Pope Pius XII given in 1951 in which he spoke this:

“Contemporary science with one sweep back across the centuries has succeeded in bearing witness to the august instant of the primordial Fiat Lux [let there be light] which along with matter burst forth from nothing...thus science has confirmed the contingency of the universe.”

Today`s Little Lesson is a eleven page gem for those with upper elementary to high school aged children.  The text is clear and is filled with great photos and facts.  Timeline pieces (or pieces that could be glued into a F3 folder, lapbook or science notebook) are included with pictures of famous scientists.  There are also three notebooking sheets and a page of Think About and Discuss questions.  This lesson is one that will surely spark family conversation, but also bring a clearer understanding to your own personal beliefs about Creation.

What We Found When We Got Back From Vacation

Going away on holidays is always nice.  Coming home can be a bit of a downer, however, as we all accept that we will return to our normal everyday activities and then, of course, there is the laundry from the trip and such.

Help the kiddos enjoy the summer flowers in your yard or on your nature walks even more with her Little Lesson on the Parts of a Flower.  This seven page resource is a great opportunity for the children to put together the parts of a flower.  She offers a few different ways you may want to use this resource either for mounting over and over or for gluing into your nature notebook for a one time use.  So cute and very hands on.

Little Lesson Marriage and Christ as the Bridegroom Pt.II
If you enjoyed the first part of this lesson last month, then you'll want to download this second part of what is hoped to be a four series.   This fourteen page installment entitled, "Marriage: Hosea and Israel's divorce of her Adonai," is a great resource to use with your tweens and teens as you begin to introduce the true essence of the sacrament of marriage by examining the behaviour of the prophet Hosea.  Jesus' view of marriage is also discussed as well.

I love that Shell has included those little questions that force you to think about the content, deeply.  For example, she poses this question: 

"But does the fact that God made a "marital covenant" with Israel make any difference to how we should consider marriage in our own families?"
She then goes on to thoughtfully answer the question with relevant scripture notations and quotations.

As usual, you will find a solid text, Bible notations, references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, opportunities for discussion, and notebooking sheets.  I also LOVE the "Watch our for that Pitfall" notations.

Just completed: Our Little Timeline of the Old Testament

Start learning history from the very beginning

When do you teach that history begins in your homeschool or CCD class?  In our little homeschool, we teach that history begins at the very beginning of time.  The start of everything begins with God's creative glory; God created everything out of nothing.  To help teach this awesome concept to our children, we use the Old Testament, of course.

We have had such great response to our Life of Christ Timeline both from our own children as well as online visitors that we decided to do a new timeline to go with the history of the Old Testament of the Bible. 

Our new timeline goes with the first half of the book, Child's Bible History by Rev. F.J. Knecht and covers some of the earliest historical occurrences.  You will find that the author focuses on 28 historical stories from the Bible, most of which are contained in the first few books of the Bible.  This read is suitable for grades 3-5 and so many of the events and topics are suited specifically for them. We have created our timeline to accompany this work although it can very easily be used independently of it.

This resource includes the timeline lines, the pieces for the timeline and a references sheet.  A unique feature of this timeline is that we have included the scripture references for each of the events highlighted.  Younger students may simply just put the timeline up and add the pieces in order.  Older learners may want to look up the passages for discussion.  Some events require a bit of reading - say a chapter or so, while other passages are quite short.

To use this resource simply download and print out the sheets.  (We recommend using heavier bond paper for the lines and regular paper for the actual pieces.)  As you read and discuss the individual stories from the Knecht book or the scripture suggestions on the timeline pieces, affix the timeline piece to the purple lines.  In general, there will be three pieces per line and 28 in total.  Feel free to modify as needed.  Perhaps you want to join the lines to make them six pieces wide or simply glue just the pieces into a history notebook - that is just fine too.  Flexibility is one of the most beautiful things about homeschooling.

Our smaller timelines are not overwhelming and are perfect for those of us who are short on space, live in an apartment or simply want to focus on one theme at a time.  Thinking about where you may want to put this timeline?  You may want to affix your timeline to any of a number of areas in your home:

A kitchen wall - great conversation spark for supper or tea time
The wall in your homeschooling area - great reference tool
Your child's bedroom wall or door - decorate with your faith
The inside of the bathroom door - for your captive audience
A large piece of poster board - for a more portable timeline.

Notebooking Sheets to Focus on the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a Few Other Goodies

Colouring sheets for the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Let us continue to focus on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. 

Perhaps you would like to learn even more about this wonderful devotion or would like a special way to encourage your child to connect with our Lord in their writing.  We can't offer funny doo-dads, trinkets and things  - as that wouldn't be offering our Lord the reverence He deserves, but we can offer some special learning helps.

God promises us many things.  As we come from the heart of the Father and are made in His image, we learn that He is always ready to love us, forgive us and welcome us back to His loving care if only we have a sincere desire to truly love Him above all things.  In the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Jesus once again makes clear the promises to us that He has every intention and power to fulfill, but what are we asked of in return?

The "Nine First Fridays" was revealed in The Promises of our Lord to St. Margaret Mary.

"I promise you, in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the first Friday for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance; they shall not die in my disgrace nor without receiving the sacraments; my divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in that last moment." 

The conditions required of this devotion include: 

1. Receive the Holy Eucharist nine times.
2. Do so on the first Friday of the month.
3. Do this for nine consecutive, uninterrupted months.
4. Do this with the proper disposition.
5. Do this with the intention of making reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to receive the fruit of this great promise.

If you are looking for a great way to explain the promises and the devotion to the Sacred Heart to your children, then you may want to read The Promises of the Sacred Heart by Fr. Lovasikto your children.  Most think of this book as only for the very young, but don't be fooled.  The average Catholic parent is only catechized to a Gr. 5 level and reminders all good for all of us! :)

If you would like a read for your older children or a simple novel for adults, try Saint Margaret Mary: And the Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Mary Fabyan Windeatt.  Many Catholic children (and adults too) enjoy this book series.  Keep in mind that these books are not all equal in reading difficulty, length and topicality either.  If your child has a gentle heart, keep that in mind when choosing which saints to explore.  Details of martyrdom can sometimes be a bit difficult for younger readers.

A Little Lesson to Learn the History of the Priesthood

 A brief overview of the Biblical roots of the priesthood and its nature for discussion and some notes for lapbooking.

Having just recently taken an intense course on the Theology of the Body focusing on the papal teachings and wisdom of Pope John Paul II,  I listened to our speaker, Fr. Alan Boisclair, explain about the tremendous love that calls a man to the priesthood.  It was completely inspiring.  So I can tell you that I was completely excited to learn that a Little Lesson on a Brief History of the Priesthood by Mum6kids, Shell, over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle was ready to help me shed even more light on the awesomeness of the priesthood for my kiddos.

This 34 page resource pack gives tons of interesting information about the sacrament of Holy Orders, more commonly known as the priesthood.  Expect to read all kinds of historical facts as well as a bit of history about the author and her spiritual journey.  Quite inspirational to see how God has worked in each of our lives.  The root question about the authority of the Church and  her pope and bishops is answered quite well in this introductory resource.

This lesson is thought provoking as almost all her Little Lessons are, but it is unique in that it lends itself very well to discussions utilizing coloured question prompts.  This meas that families can discuss this together and those who have already been confirmed or who are strong readers will find this a great independent read.  Shell has included some great go-alongs including notebooking sheets, lapbooking (F3) pieces and little pieces that could be used as writing prompts, flaps or timeline pieces.  Here are a few samples for you.

F3 Resources to Help Study About the Gospel and the Evangelists

Encourage learners to Explore the Gospels

Lent and Easter provide us with a great opportunity to hear the Gospel from more than one Evangelist.  We know that the word gospel means "good news" while evangelist means "teller of the good news - our Saviour has come".  The Evangelists - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - each have a unique way of writing about the life of our Lord in the books of the New Testament called the Gospels. 

St. John wrote as a loving friend of Jesus; his gospel is often referred to as the Gospel of Love. 

St. Matthew writes as a apostle or eyewitness and includes more of Jesus' teachings on the heavenly kingdom than any of the other writers.  For example, he writes a complete account of the Sermon on the Mount. 

St. Luke gives a great detailed account as one would expect from a doctor.  Although He did not know or travel with the Master, he interviewed many people who did including the Blessed Virgin Mary.  A co-worker with St. Paul, and author of the book the Acts of the Apostles, he compiled all of the interviews he took about the life and times of our Lord Jesus into one very detailed account.  His writings were meant for everyone who loves God.

St. Mark wrote his gospel account in the words of St. Peter.  It is Peter's eyewitness account of Jesus' ministry, life, death and Resurrection. 

Each cover and include many of the same facts, but sometime there are unique differences that set them apart for the reader.  One easy example of this can be seen in when the author's introduce our Lord.  Matthew begins at the genealogy of Christ, while Mark begins with John the Baptist crying out in the wilderness. St. John's Gospel was the last to be written of the four and included many details left out by the other three writers. 

To help learners (both young and old) more easily understand the Bible, we created a few notebooking sheets and F3 (flip, flap and fold) pieces that can be used to learn about the evangelists, the Gospels and then individual accounts in the Bible. 

The notebooking sheets give an opportunity to comparatively write out the details of a specific event as it occurs in each gospel.  We have created two sheets.  One could write or draw details.  These can be useful for grades 4+.

The F3 pieces provided are patterned after the inquisitive KWL style organize(know, want to know, have learned).  In this set you will find sets featuring:  the Gospels, The Evangelists, St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John.  There is opportunity for drawing as well as writing.  This F3 project resource can be completed and mounted on card stock and then bound together using a spine of some sort, brads, rings or any other way that you may prefer.
