19th Century Timeline Notebook Gives a Great Catholic Perspective of the 1800s

Examine the events of history with this 19th Century Timeline Notebook lovingly created by Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle Blog. The nine-page resource serves to share world history as well as Catholic events from the 1800s with a running list of historical events - including the birth or death of specific saints, apparitions from our Blessed Mother, and more.

Little Lesson on the Seven Last Words

Little Lesson for mature learners is the perfect way to reflect on Jesus and learn about His seven last words.

This wonderful lesson written and created by Michelle of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog is forty pages of reflection on Christ's seven last words during His passion and death. Created with young adults in mind, this lesson could be a very nice independent religion activity for mature learners  or it could be a reflective guided study with mom or dad.

The Seven Last Words are considered an integral part of the study of the Passion of our Lord, and are actually sentences uttered by our Lord from the cross. If you are not familiar with all the passages from our Lord, here are the seven sentences that will be focused upon in this Little Lesson.

Father Forgive them, they know not what they do.
This day you shall be with Me in Paradise.
Woman behold thy son, Son behold thy mother.
I thirst.
My God, My God why hast thou forsaken me?
It is consummated.
Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit.

Little Lesson on the Council of Nicaea and the Creed

Little Lesson from Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog helps young Christians learn about the Council, the Creed, and what they actually stand for.

This Little Lesson is not little at all - it is 58 pages. Filled with great text, lots of info to ponder and many engaging F3 or lapbook style pieces, this resource is perfect for your family and is sure to be enjoyed on some level by any aged student. Look for lots of classic artwork, heroic evidence of many saints and martyrs, and tons of factual finds.

There are many interesting and captivating features, including mini-timeline, beautiful notebooking sheets, maps, prayers, a crossword puzzle and my favorite, the Pitfall Alert, which features the truth of often thought misconceptions of the faith.

This resource is designed to be printed double-sided although the pages which require cutting feature a blank back-side to help conserve paper and avoid frustration.

This is well worth the read and promises to be fun and engaging.

It's Here!! Advent and Christmas People and Their Stories Pt.III - Fun learning for this week and beyond

Father reminded us in his homily yesterday about doing our duty as Catholics - and it wasn't what I thought he was going to say.  I thought he was going to talk about going to church or confession, but he didn't.  He explained that many do not understand what the word "duty" means, especially in today's world, which gives the word a negative connotation.  He easily explained that means doing what needs to be done, in the right spirit, for the glory of God and that duties should directly correspond to our vocation. 

At this time of year many are overwhelmed in things that they think need to be done - what they sometimes consider "duties."  Keeping God at the forefront of every hour of the day can get lost among shopping, wrapping, standing in line, cooking. and entertaining.  Let us help by suggesting you take a bit of time out this week to teach a Little Lesson on Advent and Christmas to your family (or even just sit down by yourself and go through the lesson on your own.)

This third installment of Advent and Christmas People and Their Stories focuses on St. Nicholas, St. Stephen, the angels, St. Wenceslas, St. John the Baptist, the Baptism of our Lord, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the use of chiaroscuro.  You can expect an engaging text and many opportunities for discussion with the kiddos or quiet independent pondering.  Shell has thoughtfully left spaces throughout the text to keep notes or jot down points of interest.  Carefully chosen artwork images really bring this lesson to life as well.

So while many people are busily bustling around preparing for Christmas, we are taking things slow this week and trying to keep God at the forefront of every hour of the day.  We are having our final choir practices for Christmas Eve Mass, listening to real carols as we relax in front of the Christmas tree playing board games, watching classic Christmas specials on DVD, and participating in our church cleaning and decorating for Christmas. (Oh! It is such a wonderful time of fellowship and activity for the family.  Many families from our parish get together to clean all of the nooks and crannies and put up all of the beautiful decorations for Christmas.  Then we pile into the hall for a wonderful lunch altogether.)
May you have a wonderful week of relaxing preparation for Jesus Birthday - however your family chooses to get ready for it!  :)

Great Little Lesson of Advent Stories

Advent is upon us and what a better way to celebrate it than with a little lesson perfect for family learning.  Advent and Christmas, People and their stories is a great little lesson written by Shell of   Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog. 

In her lesson Shell reminds us that Advent is a time of waiting and preparation but it is also a time for reflection.  In this unique lesson she examines the people who have been a part of the original story of Christmas from Scripture, tradition or even myths.  The people she highlights include:  St. Anne, St. Joachim, Anna the Prophetess, St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Zachariah, St. John the Baptist and others including the shepherds in the field,   The events highlighted include the Immaculate Conception, the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity and Circumcision of Jesus, the Nativity and Circumcision of St. John the Baptist and more.

This file is 49 pages in length and is designed for double sided printing so that you can cuddle up on the couch and read this like a book to the kiddos.  You could very easily print this single sided as well.  Some great features of this double sided printable lesson include:

More Catholic Scientists - Little Lesson on Dr. Alois Alzheimer

I am so happy that we are able to offer resources for older learners through the generosity, energy and talent of others.  The latest Little Lessons on science by Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog have been well received and have been very thought provoking.  So, here is another Little Lesson focused on another Catholic scientist.

Learn about Alois Alzheimer the gentle neurologist with the latest little science lesson.  Expect that you will walk away after this lesson with a better understanding of  Dr. Alzheimer as well as the disease for which he did extensive study and was eventually named after him.

As Dr. Alzheimer was a leader in the humane and proper care of those with mental illness and organic disability, this lesson will also provide a great opportunity to talk about the idea of free will as it pertains to the Catechism as well as introduce the work of St. Thomas Aquinas in terms of drawing the line between madness and badness. 

Although not an easy topic to cover, this lesson is a great starting point.  There are ten pages in the file which include a ready to go text, opportunities for discussion and four very well done notebooking sheets.  Explore a lesson that will help you begin  to see how well you your faith and how to apply it to your thinking in our very modern and complicated world.

Our Lady and Astronomers

If you've ever watched the original Iron Chef series from Japan, (we love it even with subtitles,) then you know that exciting moment when the announcer says:  "The Iron Chef has four offerings today," and then we get to see what he has made.  Today I can be a bit like my favourite show and say, "Kalei has two resource offerings today!"

Shell from Thinking Love, No Twaddle has been such a busy little bee and has lots to share with us to pass on to other homeschooling families.

Our Lady

Our first offering today is a poetry lesson based on the poem, "Ballade to Our Lady of Czestochowa" by Hilaire Belloc.  This six page lesson includes the poem and additional notes on Hilaire Belloc, St. Hildagard of Bingen and Our Lady of Czestochowa.  Also included are two beautiful notebooking pages that would be beautiful to copy out the poem or write a bit about Our Lady, St. Hildagard or the author.

Astronomers

Our second resource is a Little Lesson on Father Pietro Angelo Secchi SJ, astronomer and sunspot spotter.  This is a seven page resource that highlights another Catholic scientist who lived from 1818-1878.  He made massive steps in forwarding our knowledge of the cosmos while serving as a shining example of steadfast devotion to the faith even in the eyes of political opposition to the church.  The lesson includes a packed text of info including a timeline of the author's life and accomplishments, discussion questions, notebooking sheet and a chance to have some hands-on simple, science fun.

Day Without Yesterday, Little Lesson on Msgr. Georges Lemaitre, Father of the Big Bang Theory

I love it when things work out this way.  I couldn't have planned it any better.  I posted our Famous Scientists learning cards yesterday and today I opened my inbox to find a great and solid Little Lesson on Monsignor Georges Lemaitre, Father of the Big Bang Theory from Shell, homeschool mum of six, over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog.

Some people have a way of making really hard things understandable.  Shell is one of those people.  She writes, creates and shares these wonderful lessons for homeschoolers.  She asks for nothing in return except for prayers for both our families.  And because of her effort, I now really know the history of the Big Bang Theory and the Catholic perspective on it.  You can even read the Vatican Document entitled, “Un Ora di Serenna” by Pope Pius XII given in 1951 in which he spoke this:

“Contemporary science with one sweep back across the centuries has succeeded in bearing witness to the august instant of the primordial Fiat Lux [let there be light] which along with matter burst forth from nothing...thus science has confirmed the contingency of the universe.”

Today`s Little Lesson is a eleven page gem for those with upper elementary to high school aged children.  The text is clear and is filled with great photos and facts.  Timeline pieces (or pieces that could be glued into a F3 folder, lapbook or science notebook) are included with pictures of famous scientists.  There are also three notebooking sheets and a page of Think About and Discuss questions.  This lesson is one that will surely spark family conversation, but also bring a clearer understanding to your own personal beliefs about Creation.

Help the kiddos enjoy the summer flowers in your yard or on your nature walks even more with her Little Lesson on the Parts of a Flower.  This seven page resource is a great opportunity for the children to put together the parts of a flower.  She offers a few different ways you may want to use this resource either for mounting over and over or for gluing into your nature notebook for a one time use.  So cute and very hands on.

Little Lesson Marriage and Christ as the Bridegroom Pt.II
If you enjoyed the first part of this lesson last month, then you'll want to download this second part of what is hoped to be a four series.   This fourteen page installment entitled, "Marriage: Hosea and Israel's divorce of her Adonai," is a great resource to use with your tweens and teens as you begin to introduce the true essence of the sacrament of marriage by examining the behaviour of the prophet Hosea.  Jesus' view of marriage is also discussed as well.

I love that Shell has included those little questions that force you to think about the content, deeply.  For example, she poses this question: 

"But does the fact that God made a "marital covenant" with Israel make any difference to how we should consider marriage in our own families?"
She then goes on to thoughtfully answer the question with relevant scripture notations and quotations.

As usual, you will find a solid text, Bible notations, references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, opportunities for discussion, and notebooking sheets.  I also LOVE the "Watch our for that Pitfall" notations.

Little Lesson on the Sacrament of Marriage Part I

Marriage and Christ as the Bridegroom

The current marriage statistics in North America suggested that over half of today's marriages will fail and end in divorce.  This is a sad and frightening statistic.  As Catholics we recognize marriage as a sacrament - an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.   We also know that once we receive the Sacrament of Marriage we are bound to our spouses until parted by death. 

The Catholic Church believes that the Sacrament of Marriage cannot be dissolved; this goes back to the Council of Trent.  In certain and grave instances one could possibly be eligible for an annulment, but it is a very specific, detailed and time consuming process which is in total contrast to a simple civil divorce which many people use as a way out.  In our Lord's eyes and the eyes of the Church we are still married even if we decide to simply obtain a civil divorce.  If we further decide to take another partner out of wedlock or civilly remarry, we are committing a grave mortal sin.  So how can we prevent this tragedy from needing to occur?  Very simply put, learn what marriage REALLY is.  It really is an amazingly awesome gift from God.

Having recently taken an intense course on the Theology of the Body (TOB),  I along with other parishioners and our pastor, listened to a wonderful passionate lessons on what it means to be married.  It was phenomenal and delivered by Fr. Alan Boisclair whose assigned mission it is to bring the knowledge, truth and understanding of the TOB to parishes and priests in North America.  Pope John Paul II was way ahead of his time when he began giving his Wednesday addresses teaching humanity about the sacred union of marriage through the TOB.  And believe me, if we all knew what marriage was intended to be for us by God, we would teach our children to discern and choose partners more carefully and look to marriage as something to be cherished and celebrated for really we are actually entering into a marriage of male, female and the Creator.

Today I share a wonderful little lesson that Shell of  Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog has written about the sacrament of marriage.  This is part one of her lesson which she hopes to continue over the summer.  I think it is very well done and helps introduce young people to this wonderful sacrament in a knowledgeable and reverent light looking to scripture as a base.  Last month she focused on the sacrament of the priesthood or Holy Orders and this month she gives us the alternative to the call to religious life.  This lesson entitled, Marriage and Christ the Bridegroom is twelves pages long and includes the lesson text, images, a Bible bit, notebooking pages and some great thoughts and prompts for discussion including:

Who was the first bridegroom and priest?

Who is the second Adam and how was He a bridegroom and priest?

What is the difference between a Covenant and a contract?

In what way does Israel "divorce" God?

Expect that you will learn a bit of history of the sacrament and having your Bible handy will enhance your understanding of some key truths of our faith, which sadly go unacknowledged  by many.  This lesson is first in what Shell hopes to be a series of at least three parts including a lesson on Hosea and Jesus' Words in the Gospel of Matthew and another lesson covering the purpose of marriage.

As a side note:  If you are not familiar with the TOB let me recommend a few resources for you.  These should be on every homeschooling family's bookshelf and they will help you immensely in understanding God's plan for our lives in the union of marriage and familyhood.

Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology Of The Body by Pope John Paul II 

Let me preface that in Man and Woman He Created Them, the first part of the book explains how the book got to be as it was translated and organized.  Start reading the text portion and don't worry about the front portion as it is very difficult reading.  Simply take each morsel paragraph by paragraph and you will see the truth of our Lord unfold before your eyes. 

This is not an easy read, but it is so worthwhile and will help you with the children in those most important teen years when questions arise about vocations, dating, sex, marriage and procreation.  As they begin to think about dating we want them to embrace the idea of chastity; as they think of career we want them also to consider religious life; as they think about love we want them to unite it to God; when they talk about marriage we want them to think about the fruits of their love.  This book will equip you to help with these tasks.  You can also read these from the EWTN archives here.



Love and Responsibility by Pope John Paul II 

This is a literary gem that will really help parents prepare for leading their children into adulthood.  Young adults will find this book helpful as well and it too was recommended in our TOB course.  It is a good sized read that will engage readers as only Pope John Paul the Great could. He covers everything from chastity, love, ethics, shame, continence, marriage, paternity, maternity, and so much more.

I hope you find these books very helpful in parenting and preparing your children for life.  They would also be great as background reading to accompany Shell's series of lessons on the sacrament of marriage.

Pentecost Marks the End of Easter. Now what do we do? Let St. Anthony and the CCC help.

What do you have planned for your spiritual year?

With the celebration of Pentecost, the Easter season will officially come to a close. We are now reassured of God's love and our forthcoming eternal life illustrated through Christ's resurrection. With Pentecost we recognize our call to become disciples of Christ and display our allegiance and love to God through our actions. The challenge for each one of us will be to remember Easter all year through. Mother church helps us with this task by focusing our spiritual attention on different aspects of our faith. We call this the Dedication of the months.

Here are the areas that Mother Church suggests we should focus on yearly basis by month:

January - The Holy Name of Jesus

February - The Passion

March - St. Joseph

April - The Resurrection

May - The Blessed Virgin
June - The Sacred Heart
July - The Precious Blood
August - The Assumption
September - The Holy Cross
October - The Rosary
November - The Poor Souls (Holy Souls in Purgatory)
December - Advent (The Coming of Christ)

Although we are given a monthly focus, there are still tons of opportunities throughout the year to focus on different rich aspects of our Faith. We recall different mysteries of the Rosary - The Annunciation, The Assumption, Easter, Christmas and many others. We also recall the wonderful faithful works of the holy saints. One such saint that has a special place in our little homeschool is St. Anthony of Padua. His feast day is June 13th. We have put together a page with fun printable resources to help you celebrate the feast day of this saint with your family or classroom too.

Another way to celebrate your faith daily is through learning and living the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church). We can do this very simply by knowing what God expects of us and being willing to do His will. Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog has created a quick reference sheet to help us all remember and learn the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the Lord's prayer. This sheet can be used in a number of ways. It can be a reference sheet. It can be cut apart and put on flashcards for ordered play or matching play. It could be attached in an F3 folder or used in a unit study for lesson reinforcement. These are just a few ideas.

A Little Lesson to Learn the History of the Priesthood

 A brief overview of the Biblical roots of the priesthood and its nature for discussion and some notes for lapbooking.

Having just recently taken an intense course on the Theology of the Body focusing on the papal teachings and wisdom of Pope John Paul II,  I listened to our speaker, Fr. Alan Boisclair, explain about the tremendous love that calls a man to the priesthood.  It was completely inspiring.  So I can tell you that I was completely excited to learn that a Little Lesson on a Brief History of the Priesthood by Mum6kids, Shell, over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle was ready to help me shed even more light on the awesomeness of the priesthood for my kiddos.

This 34 page resource pack gives tons of interesting information about the sacrament of Holy Orders, more commonly known as the priesthood.  Expect to read all kinds of historical facts as well as a bit of history about the author and her spiritual journey.  Quite inspirational to see how God has worked in each of our lives.  The root question about the authority of the Church and  her pope and bishops is answered quite well in this introductory resource.

This lesson is thought provoking as almost all her Little Lessons are, but it is unique in that it lends itself very well to discussions utilizing coloured question prompts.  This meas that families can discuss this together and those who have already been confirmed or who are strong readers will find this a great independent read.  Shell has included some great go-alongs including notebooking sheets, lapbooking (F3) pieces and little pieces that could be used as writing prompts, flaps or timeline pieces.  Here are a few samples for you.

LIttle Lesson is Perfect for Teaching About Heroism

Little lapbook lesson brings an old heroine to life.

Looking for a little side lesson to help bring a bit of extra history or geography to life while focusing on a truly heroic young lady?  If you wish it were a bit of a cut-n-paste, "doing something" learning activity too, then we may have just the thing for you and the kiddos.  Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle has just shared with us a little lesson she created about Grace Darling. 

I remember first reading about Grace Darling in Fifty Famous Stories Retold  by James Baldwin.  This was a beloved read-aloud that is very popular with Charlotte Mason Style learners.  We read it about four years ago and are getting ready to embark on a second reading this coming September.  This latest lesson from Shell is a perfect addition to your reading of the story entitled, simply, Grace Darling.

In this self-contained lesson you will find background information about the heroism of Grace Darling plus a few pages of lapbook pieces.  It is a great story and the pieces are inviting and colourful.  She has created the file so that it can be printed double sided without cutting the text part of the lesson off with the lapbooking pieces.

We are over half way through Lent.  Easter will soon be upon us.  Our focus will shift from our suffering Lord to our Risen Lord.  We will walk soon walk down the Road of Joy - Via Guade, with our Lord.  To help make this walk more meaningful, Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle has written this WONDERFUL 58 page lesson for our families. 

This new lesson is chalked full of wonderful classic artwork, fun F3 (lapbooking) pieces that reinforce the material, scripture references, mapping exposure, notebooking and copywork opportunities plus some great pieces that could be used for timeline work as well.  You will learn about the events of the Resurrection, the twelve apostles, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Sacrament of Confirmation and so much more.  Add a wonderfully written text that expresses one homeschooling mums love for her faith, and you have a wonderfully complete lesson perfect to celebrate the liturgical season.

And as if that weren't enough, Shell has left some pages blank for easy printing back to back - I love that!  We are just finishing up her Via Dolorosa lesson for Lent in our family and we are really looking forward to starting this one - the timing couldn't be more perfect.  This freebie is a wonderful testimony to the richness of our faith and the love and desire that we have to share it with others.
