St. Francis of Assisi is perhaps one of the most popular and well known saints in the world. There is so much to tell about this holy hero of the past. Many remember him for his association and gentleness with animals. Others recall the wonderful prayer of St. Francis, which tells us, specifically how to be better Christians. But I remember most fondly that St. Francis is the one responsible for the nativity scene as we know it today.

We offer these resources to help inspire young Catholics to learn more about St. Francis of Assisi.

Resources to Help Celebrate the Feast of St. Francis de Sales

This Month, Celebrate the Feast Day of One of the Most Beloved Doctors of the Catholic Church.

Perhaps one of my favorite saints is St. Francis de Sales.  Born in 1567 of French decent, he became Bishop of Geneva and was raised to the status of Doctor of the Catholic Church.  He was given the distinction of Doctor Caritatis (Doctor of Charity) and once you learn more about his life, you will easily see why this man was so well received, loved and admired for his contribution to the advancement of our wonderful and rich Faith.

This saint holds a special place in my heart not because he was a Doctor of the Catholic Church, nor because he is the patron of writers or journalists, developed a sign-language to communicate with, evangelize to and instruct the deaf or even because he made extensive use of flyers and books in his teaching of the Catholic Faith to others. I love him simply because he is, in my opinion, one of the best and most eloquent authors of works on the topic of spiritual direction and spiritual formation.  (St. Alphonsus Liguori is also a beautiful heartfelt writer too.)  Perhaps St. Francis' most famous work, received so very well by many Christians and Catholics, was Philothea also called Introduction to the Devout Life.  Written in 1608 by the talented saint, it is a must read for every Christian.

Help introduce your kiddos to this wonderful saint with some of our faith resources.

St. Francis de Sales copywork features a quote from the saint in a simple copywork format that even the littlest learners can use.

St. Francis de Sales Printable Saint Trading cards come four to a sheet and give a bit of info of this saint and one of his famous quotes.  It is a nice simple card for new readers and collectors.

St. Francis de Sales Mini-Book is a small eight page booklet that kiddos can easily make.  It is a prompted book which asks writers to list some basic biographical info about this saint.  Younger learners can draw many of the answers.  This is always a fun activity for children whether they are new or veteran writers.

It's Here!! Advent and Christmas People and Their Stories Pt.III - Fun learning for this week and beyond

Get it NOW!  Shell from Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog has finished the last portion of her Little Lesson: Advent and Christmas People and their stories Part III!

Father reminded us in his homily yesterday about doing our duty as Catholics - and it wasn't what I thought he was going to say.  I thought he was going to talk about going to church or confession, but he didn't.  He explained that many do not understand what the word "duty" means, especially in today's world, which gives the word a negative connotation.  He easily explained that means doing what needs to be done, in the right spirit, for the glory of God and that duties should directly correspond to our vocation.

At this time of year many are overwhelmed in things that they think need to be done - what they sometimes consider "duties."  Keeping God at the forefront of every hour of the day can get lost among shopping, wrapping, standing in line, cooking. and entertaining.  Let us help by suggesting you take a bit of time out this week to teach a Little Lesson on Advent and Christmas to your family (or even just sit down by yourself and go through the lesson on your own.)

This third installment of Advent and Christmas People and Their Stories focuses on St. Nicholas, St. Stephen, the angels, St. Wenceslas, St. John the Baptist, the Baptism of our Lord, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the use of chiaroscuro.  You can expect an engaging text and many opportunities for discussion with the kiddos or quiet independent pondering.  Shell has thoughtfully left spaces throughout the text to keep notes or jot down points of interest.  Carefully chosen artwork images really bring this lesson to life as well.

As always the little extras make this lesson even sweeter including the prayer to our Guardian Angel, English and Latin version of the lyrics of Good King Wenceslas and three sets of quick quiz cards for review and narration opportunities.  Download this part of the lesson or all three of them now.

Little Lesson of Advent and Christmas Part III
Little Lesson of Advent and Christmas Part II
Little Lesson of Advent and Christmas Part I

So while many people are busily bustling around preparing for Christmas, we are taking things slow this week and trying to keep God at the forefront of every hour of the day.  We are having our final choir practices for Christmas Eve Mass, listening to real carols as we relax in front of the Christmas tree playing board games, watching classic Christmas specials on DVD, and participating in our church cleaning and decorating for Christmas. (Oh! It is such a wonderful time of fellowship and activity for the family.  Many families from our parish get together to clean all of the nooks and crannies and put up all of the beautiful decorations for Christmas.  Then we pile into the hall for a wonderful lunch altogether.)
May you have a wonderful week of relaxing preparation for Jesus Birthday - however your family chooses to get ready for it!  :)
Blessings,
Kalei

Lest We Forget..Resources, Activities and a Reflection for November 11th

Resources to help children remember those who have gone before them.
My father, God rest his soul, fought in WWII.  He was drafted at age twenty along with his brothers to serve and protect his country in the armed forces.  He always felt it was an honour.  He never spoke about the fear he felt, but only of the obedient duties that he and his platoon performed.  Growing up, I remember seeing war photos that my dad had brought back with him from the war depicting the many prisoners and horrors he observed in the concentration camps in Germany.  As the army tanks rolled down the streets, his photos showed bodies disrespectfully strewn on the sides of the road and terror on the faces of men, women and children.  At age ten, I had truly come to understand the phrase of William Tecumseh Sherman, "War is hell."  And yet, many of our fallen brothers and sisters have been forgotten by the present generation.

Let us help our children remember those who have gone before them to afford them and us the luxury to be safe and free, to be Christians, as well as to be able to homeschool our children.  In today's world of video games depicting glorified violence without consequence, misplaced reverence of pride, and morally numbing activities that confuse children and adults alike about their own identities as human beings, men and women, citizens and Christians - I'm sure my father would agree that he did not offer to lay down his life for this degeneration of humanity.   We can remember the past and current sacrifices of peacekeepers and veterans by choosing to do a few of the activities below.
November 11th - Remembrance Day, Armed Forces Day, or Veteran's Day - is a day to remember all those who have gone before us securing our rights and freedoms and those of others as well.  It is also affords us a formal opportunity as honour those who are still serving and peacekeeping around the world.

Here are a few resource ideas to help you celebrate this day in your family.

1.  Pray and attend Mass.
As our Pastor suggested to us, attend Mass on the November 11th and offer Holy Communion for the departed souls who have died in war.  Their souls should also be remembered with your daily prayers all November for the Holy Souls.

2.  Observe a moment of silence and reflection.
In Canada, the population observes the designated moments of silence of the eleventh minute, of the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month.  For just a few moments, we are encouraged to stop and be thankful that others that have gone before us were courageous, honourable, obedient, and selfless.

3.  Create a visible reminder.
Whether you place family photos of loved ones past on the fireplace mantle or paint a picture of a field of poppies, encourage your children to remember this important day in a way they can find meaningful.  Perhaps you may want to create a bouquet of red paper poppies with the name of family or friends who have served or are still serving in peacekeeping missions.  Place your bouquet in a prominent place and pray the rosary for those shown on your flowers.

4.  Read through the poem, In Flanders Field by John McCrae.
You can find it at the bottom of this post.  Reading through the poem can not only be a little lesson on how to read poetry and identify rhyme scheme, but it is also an opportunity to better understand the role of the poppy used for celebration and memorial services on Remembrance Day in Canada.

Perhaps you would like to use this as copy work?  We have some trace copywork sheets just for this purpose in print as well as cursive.
Download the In Flanders Field copywork.  There are twelve pages in all.

5.  Learn about St. Maximilian Kolbe.
This inspirational saint was a Polish Franciscan Friar who volunteered to die in the place of a stranger while he was held in the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz, in Poland.  You may want to print out our St. Maximilian saint collector trading card or perhaps complete a My Book Mini-book about him using your favourite resources at home or from the Internet.
Download our Saint Maximilian Kolbe Saint Trading Card.
Download our Saint Maximilian Kolbe Mini-book.
Download our Saint Maximilian Kolbe Spiritual Copywork.

6.  Think about soldiers as individuals.
Using our graphic organizer template, note the virtues or positive attributes (adjectives) of the image pictured in the centre.  There is also a blank template for you in case you would like to place or draw a picture of a military hero - a family member, friend, or public figure - and note the virtues or positive attributes that this person personified.

7.  Learn more about the holiday and its meaning.
Here are a few ways that you can learn more:

-Talk to a veteran or schedule one to come and speak to your homeschool group or co-op.  Veteran's can be found in almost every parish and retirement community.  They are usually eager to share their stories and experiences with others especially young people who show interest.

-Visit a museum to learn more about your local history and veteran's from your area.  Our town is lucky enough to have a memorial museum where visitors can see authentic photographs, artifacts, maps and more from the WWI and WWII.  Local veterans are highlighted and honoured and the museum is run by the veterans.

-Borrow child friendly books from your local library such as Truce: The Day the Soldiers Stopped Fighting by Jim Murphy or A Poppy is to RememberLightburn.

Let us always strive to remember, honour and pray for those who have gone before us in obedience, courage and love.

I hope you find these resources helpful.

Blessings,
Kalei

In Flanders Field
by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE US .  .  .

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

A Saint Mini-book Project with a Focus on the Doctors of the Church

If I showed you pictures of an astronaut, a dog and a waitress would you be able to name their patron saints?  If I asked you to name any four doctors of the Catholic Church could you do it quickly and without hesitation?

I hope that you would have answered St. Joseph of Cupertino for astronauts, St. Roch for dogs, and St. Martha for the waitress,  but if you didn't then our All About the Saints Mini-Book Unit Study might be a fun project for you and your family or religious ed. or CCD classroom to complete together.

If you have never completed one of our Mini-Book Unit studies before you will find it to be a fun and engaging project for learners of all ages.  One year I did the study right along with my kiddos.  We had fun and I was surprised at just how creative we can be with only eight little pages per book.

There are five steps to the unit study:

1. Download the unit.   It is a zipped file and you will need to unzip it as it contains many files including the mini-books, instructions, listings of the Doctors of the Church, Keepsake memory pages and unit cover sheet.

2. Print out the individual files.  Instructions are given on the first page of the unit file. Books should be printed on regular paper. Memory pages are designed to be printed double-sided on cardstock but will work single-sided as well. We use cardstock so that when our little books are attached the pages will be sturdy.

3. Assemble the unit pages.  Bind memory pages using a comb binder, 3 ring binder, duo tang, or other binding of choice.

4. Create the mini-books. Have children create books through writing and/or drawing as they learn from resources from your own home, your parish library, the local library, the Internet, text books, videos, etc. about the highlighted saints.

The printable mini-books in this unit study are prompted and require learners to research and fill in basic information about the featured saint including such things as when and where they lived, their patronage, special symbols, and when we may find their intercession necessary and helpful.
Feel free to let learners take real ownership of their projects by allowing them to make it as fancy as they like using coloured pencils, crayons or other art supplies. A good dictionary and thesaurus are great tools to give them as well as they encourage the use of new vocabulary and accurate spelling.

5. Attach the mini-books. Affix mini-books to the keepsake pages in their proper place. There is a designated spot for each book. In some units you are free to rearrange the order of the keepsake pages to meet your family's needs. Be sure to mark the date in as well as your learner is sure to come back to this finished project over and over.

Learn more about or download our All About the Saints Mini-Book project now.
Enjoy the fun!!
Blessings,
Kalei

Now You Can Celebrate the Saints All Week, Month or Even Year Long. . .

Help children develop good character and morals by learning about and studying the lives of the Holy Saints.

Learning about the saints is an excellent way to learn about God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The resources below can help to enrich your child's understanding of these people who have encountered our Lord in many different ways. In a day and age when singers, stars, and sports people are considered role models by many youth, the study of our Catholic heroes is more important than ever.

My Adventure with the Saints project is a fun way to get to know some new saints and review the lives of some already familiar ones. By using the letters of the alphabet as a guide, learners must choose at least one saint for each letter of the alphabet and describe their life. The description should contain the following information:

-Name
-When they lived (birth and death if known)
-Where they are noted from
-Symbol that would identify them in a work of art, statue or icon
-Patron saint info
-A portrait of the saint and their symbol(s) - either drawn or pasted in from other sources.

A progress sheet is also included to help children keep track of the tasks they have completed and goals that need to be met to complete the project.  To make it easier to get started, over sized alphabet letters are included in the project so that learners can cut them out and creatively incorporate them into the corresponding page.

Learners will also be asked to complete the 5Ws (and 1 H ) of Sainthood:
Who can become a Saint?
What does it take to become a saint?
When can one be declared a saint?
Where do saints fit in to the Communion of Saints?
Why would one want to become a saint?
How can you become more saint like?

This is a great project that can be used over the course of the year, a month, or however else you may choose to use it. This project could also be undertaken and split among siblings or students in a CCD Religious Education Class.

Find out more or download My Adventure with the Saints Project now.

Here are some samples that my then third grader did years ago.  She had loads of fun being creative while practicing her art and drawing skills, writing skills and developing research skills as well.

Resource Run Down for the Liturgical Week Featuring St. Vincent de Paul, the Transcendent Trio and St. Jerome

Another busy liturgical week is here and we have lots to point out and share with our kiddos and yours too!  So, here is our liturgical run down for this week:

Tuesday, Sept.27 - Saint Vincent de Paul
Saint Vincent de Paul is the founder of the Congregation of the Missions (Vincentians) as well as the co-founder of the Daughters of Charity.  The son of a French peasant, he was ordained in 1600 and devoted his life to acts of charity.

Download an 12 page set of Notebooking pages on Saint Vincent de Paul from our notebooking page or download a Saint biography learning card on St. Vincent de Paul from our saint biography learning card collection.

Wednesday,  Sept. 28 - Saint Wenceslaus
You may have heard of St. Wenceslaus, King of Bohemia in the 10th century, from the Christmas carol written by John Mason Neale and published in 1853.  Wenceslaus was raised in the faith by his grandmother although his mother and brother were opposed to Christianity.  He intended on having his son take his thrown and rule with his strong beliefs in Christianity but his brother plotted against him and killed him in an ambush while the good king was on his way to Holy Mass.

For a great learning activity:  go over the lyrics or sing the carol - which is usually sung on Dec.26th for the feast of St. Stephen, who is mentioned in the lyrics.  It gives us such a great insight into the heart of this noble saint. Here is our printable version of the lyrical story of St. Wenceslaus.

Thursday, Sept. 29 - The Transcendent Trio (Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel and Saint Raphael)
This special trio of arch angels are part of the group of seven archangels who stand before God.  They are recognized and venerated in both the Christian and Jewish Faith.  This special day was once called Michaelmas in honour of St. Michael, but now this day celebrates this well known trio who are well known to intercede and protect human beings on earth.

Find out more about them and see our list of printable Resources for the Transcendent Trio.

Friday, Sept. 30th - Saint Jerome Feast Day
We love Saint Jerome in our home.  Most know that St. Jerome is responsible for us having the Bible today.  You can learn lots about St. Jerome and his accomplishments with our resources.
Learn about this great saint with a Little Lesson packet on St. Jerome.  And then check out our fun printable Resources on Saint Jerome including a mini-book, notebooking pages and more.

Pentecost Marks the End of Easter. Now what do we do? Let St. Anthony and the CCC help.

What do you have planned for your spiritual year?

With the celebration of Pentecost, the Easter season will officially come to a close. We are now reassured of God's love and our forthcoming eternal life illustrated through Christ's resurrection. With Pentecost we recognize our call to become disciples of Christ and display our allegiance and love to God through our actions. The challenge for each one of us will be to remember Easter all year through. Mother church helps us with this task by focusing our spiritual attention on different aspects of our faith. We call this the Dedication of the months.

Here are the areas that Mother Church suggests we should focus on yearly basis by month:

January - The Holy Name of Jesus
February - The Passion
March - St. Joseph
April - The Resurrection
May - The Blessed Virgin
June - The Sacred Heart
July - The Precious Blood
August - The Assumption
September - The Holy Cross
October - The Rosary
November - The Poor Souls (Holy Souls in Purgatory)
December - Advent (The Coming of Christ)
If you need a little reminder of these days, feel free to download our Learning Card on the Dedications of the Month. With two different cards per page, it is paired with the card for the Mysteries of the Rosary.

Click HERE to download this card and so other faith building cards.

Although we are given a monthly focus, there are still tons of opportunities throughout the year to focus on different rich aspects of our Faith. We recall different mysteries of the Rosary - The Annunciation, The Assumption, Easter, Christmas and many others. We also recall the wonderful faithful works of the holy saints. One such saint that has a special place in our little homeschool is St. Anthony of Padua. His feast day is June 13th. We have put together a page with fun printable resources to help you celebrate the feast day of this saint with your family or classroom too.

Click HERE to visit our page on St. Anthony now.

Another way to celebrate your faith daily is through learning and living the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church). We can do this very simply by knowing what God expects of us and being willing to do His will. Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog has created a quick reference sheet to help us all remember and learn the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the Lord's prayer. This sheet can be used in a number of ways. It can be a reference sheet. It can be cut apart and put on flashcards for ordered play or matching play. It could be attached in an F3 folder or used in a unit study for lesson reinforcement. These are just a few ideas.

Find this and other faith builders at Shell's page HERE.

We hope that your spiritual life is somehow enriched and enlivened with the use of our free printables.

Let's Learn About St. Faustina and Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet

Divine Mercy Sunday is coming up.  Are you ready?

Pope John Paul II declared the first Sunday after Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday.  This is a great opportunity for us to pray together for the remission of sins.  This wonderful devotion was revealed and given to St. Sister Faustina - as many call her - first in the form of an image and then the chaplet devotion itself was dictated to her by our Lord, Jesus, in one of His many visions to the young mystic.

As a family, we usually try to observe Divine Mercy Sunday in our parish where we pray the divine mercy chaplet as a community and we venerate the relic we are so fortunate to have of this wonderful saint who knew and loved our Lord so intimately.

Although the kiddos are a bit familiar with St. Faustina and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, which is prayed regularly in our parish, we wanted to do a bit more research on this saint who felt her first call to religious life at age seven.  To help our children explore more about St. Faustina we have created some printable resources including the printable saint trading card (featured above), new saint biography trading cards, notebooking sheets, and more.  You can find all of our resources for this saint conveniently located on one page plus you will find the directions on how to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet there as well.

Click HERE to visit our resource page devoted to St. Faustina.

We hope you find these resources useful in some way.

New Resources to Help Children Learn About St. Patrick's Feast Day

New fun printable resources to help children learn about St. Patrick of Ireland.

Saint study is such a great way to study geography, history, facts of the Faith and so much more.  It is also a nice way to add spice to your learning day with some different fun but educational activities.  We are happy to share some brand new resources we have just created to help the kiddos learn all about St. Patrick of Ireland.  These colourful, fun printables are sure to appeal to even the most fickle learners as there is a nice selection of freebies from which to choose.  Here are just a few of the resources we have to share:

A new twelve page notebooking page set can be used by learners of all ages to help focus either on St. Patrick himself or his lesson on the Holy Trinity.  There are three different layouts and four line spacing options.

Our very popular printable saint trading card collection now includes this famous saint (pictured above).  As usual, there are four cards per page which make them perfect for individual, family, or classroom use.  And if you are looking for a game suitable for up to 15 people that includes St. Patrick, then download our Catholic Bingo game which teaches many basics of the Faith while having lots of fun.  This is a great game for a St. Patrick's Day party, if you are having one.

Looking for a quick mini-book to add to your project, current folder project or notebook?  Try our My Book Mini-book on St. Patrick complete with writing prompts.  You can also find a mini-book for the Holy Trinity both with and without writing prompts.

And speaking of the Holy Trinity, don't forget our F3 lesson all about the Holy Trinity which we posted from our own CCD class earlier in the school year.  There is also quite a bit of other copywork and printables about the Holy Trinity right on the lesson page as well.  If you are looking for a science link, try our F3 lesson on the Trinity using the three states of water.  This too was an earlier post this year.  These two lessons are always fun to do with the children.

To make everything easy and convenient for busy homeschoolers and catechists, we have put all of our St. Patrick resources on one page.  Don't forget that St. Joseph's feast day is this week too!

New Resources Featuring St.Joseph

March is the Month Dedicated to St. Joseph.  Let our resources help bring him to life in your child's eyes.

March is a very busy month this year.  Ash Wednesday is coming up, Lent will begin, St. Patrick's Day is coming, Stations of the Cross devotions will begin in many parishes as well as the Feast of the Annunciation will take place at the end of the month.  Mother church knows that we could become overwhelmed and so she helps us stay on track by having the month of March dedicated to St. Joseph.  By this act, the church tells us that St. Joseph was an important part of our Lord's life and should not be forgotten but rather included in the richness of our faith.  We should take this month to focus on this saint and the wonderful virtues that he demonstrates including - trust, obedience, dedication, and patience.

To help homeschooling families and educators honour St. Joseph, we have created some new resources including a full set of twelve notebooking sheets for learners of all ages and skill levels, a new Saint Biography Learning Card and more.  Plus, you can now find all of our printable resources for this wonderful saint in one spot - including our popular printable saint trading cards -There will be more saint pages like this to follow.

We are still working behind the scenes revamping the website with features like this to make your visit more enjoyable and efficient.  To find out about more updates to our site join us on Facebook or Twitter as we won't be able to note every new addition on the blog.  We are still finding our way around them, but we'll get the hang of it, we suppose..lol.

New Printable Little Lesson on Discernment - Includes Lapbook Pieces, History Cards, Text and More

New Little Lesson on Discernment helps teach us about hearing our Lord's call.

Today I want to highlight a new little lesson from Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle.  This lesson highlights St. Peter's call to follow our Lord and proceeds to show how others were and still are called to do the same - including us.  Learners are gently guided to thoughtfully think about how our Lord may be purposing His will for them to understand, undertake and carry out to fruition by showing examples from scripture, the saints and more.

This lesson is so well done that we decided to complete it and show you our corresponding F3 Folder we created.  Why an F3 Folder?  Because they are just big enough to create and use all of the wonderful pieces Michelle has created while providing you a place to store them, the lesson text sheets and be able to refer to them later on in an orderly fashion.  There will also be some space for you to add little quotes or such.  F3 Folders close up so neatly too.  Click HERE to see how to make a folder for your needs.  We have used a single folder for this project however the link will show you how to make not only the single folder but the double folder as well.

This little lesson is eleven pages and includes some very wonderful neat little activity sheets and pieces including: information sheets, scripture references, classic pieces of art for study, notebooking sheets for copywork and prayer work.  There are also a few lapbook style pieces and some really cool history cards with pictures of classic art as well as a few for learners to make themselves.

We thoroughly enjoyed this lesson and we hope that you will too.

Bible and Prayer Study Notebooking Sheets for January

Simple notebooking sheets allow children the freedom to decide what are the most important details of their learning.

As we continue to prepare for a new year of learning, we share another resource from Michelle over at  Thinking Love, No Twaddle for your January learning. Today's download is a four page set of Prayer and Bible Study sheets.  Each sheet is different and features a different focus including the epiphany, colored art pieces featuring people in prayer, a January page with three spaces, and a page featuring two different saints.  Use one or all of the sheets from the set - whatever works for your family.

Thanks to Michelle for her time, talents and energy.  You are in our prayers. :)
