Teaching Grammar and Reviewing Theology with the Apostles' Creed Prayer

As promised, we have been focusing our home learning efforts on the learning and memorizing the new form of the Apostles' Creed.  To that end we have done grammar study, art work, memorization, copywork, catechism and spelling too.  I will pass along what we have done briefly and give you links to gather the resources for yourself from the new faith area of our resource website.

Memorization
To help with memorization of the Creed and help children learn some of the other prayers said at Mass, I made some new Learning Prayer Cards sets.  The new form of the Apostles' Creed is featured in one of the learning card sets as well as the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel for Protection, which is said after daily masses.  Another learning card set features the Sanctus or Holy. Holy, Holy in Latin and also in English.  The new form is provided.

Grammar
In the grammar department I typed out the new form of the Apostles' Creed as well as the old form and put them on separate sheets.  We then began comparing and contrasting the prayers grammatically.  The Apostles' Creed prayer sheets (plus the text from this lesson) are very useful for reference with many of the activities below.  We made some unique observations.
  1. The new form has only two sentences.  The old form has nine sentences.   Don't believe me?  See for yourself. Together the kids pointed out the subject and predicate of each of the long sentences.  Presented in a Who or what/Does what format, it is very simple to pick out the subject (noun portion) and predicate (verb portion).  You will also see the change in the number of pronouns as well.  Because of the reduction of sentences, there isn't the need to use the pronoun "he" very often.
  2. The new form uses quite a few semi-colons and to a lesser degree, commas.  This is the perfect opportunity to highlight the functions and differences in both of these punctuation marks.  The semi-colon is used to separate complex ideas within the sentence - in its simplest explanation, but using your favorite grammar text will help you give further examples of proper use of both the semi-colon and comma.
  3. Another addition to this form of the Apostles' Creed includes the use of italics to signal the need for reverence to be given by the person or persons praying. The line which uses italics is: "who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary,"
  4. This is a great opportunity to discuss plural nouns.
Apostles (more than one apostle)
Apostle's (belonging to one apostle)
Apostles' (belonging to more than one apostles or a group of apostles)

Note the position and proper use of apostrophe.*

Spelling/Handwriting
For our spelling practice this week I selected ten words that best represent the prayer to use as spelling list words for the week.  With only ten words, it can be easily accomplished by kiddos.  I also created a set of Ten Words about the Apostles' Creed copywork sheets.  This set includes trace work in print and cursive as well as a blank version for learners with better handwriting skills.  I simply printed out one sheet to use daily and gave a quick spelling check at the end of the week.

For other copywork, handwriting practice and also as an aide to help learn the prayer, I created copywork sheets for the Apostles' Creed.  Styles include a set for the Apostles' Creed in trace print, a set for the Apostles' Creed in trace cursive, and for more advanced writers, the Apostles' Creed in non-trace style.  With only a few lines per page, one sheet could be given out daily until the entire prayer is completed.

Catechism
One of the easiest things to do with the Apostles' Creed is to pick out the twelve points on which our faith is based as it was proclaimed from the twelve apostles so many centuries ago.  Use the prayer sheets from above to look throughout the prayer.  Have children underline the points with different colors.  Here are the points distinguished with different colors below.  You can also find these in the CCC as well.

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.  Amen.

Art
These coloring art sheets help to distinguish and illustrate some of the important parts of the Apostles' Creed.  Each sheet gives a title, summary of what is occurring in the image as well as a line from scripture or the prayer itself.  Here are the sheets I used:

The Holy Trinity Joined by the Saints Coloring Sheet - This sheet depicts the Holy Trinity but also the communion of saints.  See if you can note the heavenly Father, the Son (the lamb) and the Holy Spirit (dove), the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Queen of Heaven , St. Joseph, St. Peter, St. Stephen, St. Mary Magdalen, the Holy Innocents, St. Michael the Archangel, St. Gabriel the Archangel, St. John the Baptist, the terms "Ave" (Hail) and Ecce Agnus Dei (Behold the Lamb).

Easter, The Resurrection Coloring Sheet - This last sheet features a portion of the Apostles' Creed in image and words.  Mary Magdalene meets Jesus just outside His tomb.  The angel is present as well.  Note the beautiful pious halo that is above Christ's head.

So, this is what we did this week to begin getting ready for the transition for the New Roman Missal.

I hope you find this lesson very helpful!

Blessings,
Kalei

A few Sweets and Treats for Learning

As treats are a focus today and even on All Saint's Day as many families combine dressing up, candy and All Saints Day Celebrations, I thought I would just offer a few themed things on sweets and treats.

Counting comes to life with our Welcome to My Kitchen Learning Card Set
This delightful card set tells a baker's story of the things and ingredients needed in their kitchen to bake sweets and treats. Numerals, number words and graphics all match to teach numbers from one to twenty. This set includes twenty bright and colourful cards that also reinforce basic reading skills of simple sentences and words associated with a kitchen including measuring cups, mixers, rolling pins and more.

See our collection of math learning cards to download our fun and interactive Welcome to My Kitchen Learning Card Set.

Our Sweet Shop Candy Math Game is perfect for today as it features collecting candy while teaching valuable math skills. Featured before on our blog, it is worth a repeat mention as the kiddos love playing this game.

Halloween themed Write and Draw Describing Nouns Worksheets
Adjectives are words that describe a noun. Help children learn to increase their descriptive skills with our unique worksheets that allow not only for writing but drawing as well. Why include drawing? Writing limits many young learners who haven't quite developed the dexterity or spelling skills needed to keep up with their thoughts. Writing isn't always necessary to show proof of understanding. I'm sure Socrates and Charlotte Mason would agree with this statement whole heartedly.

This little set of three worksheets features a pumpkin, a princess and a cute little ghost.

Download our Halloween Set of Adjective Write and Draw Worksheets.

Hope this helps bring a few smiles to your kiddos faces.

Blessings,
Kalei

Resource Run Down for the Liturgical Week Featuring St. Vincent de Paul, the Transcendent Trio and St. Jerome

Another busy liturgical week is here and we have lots to point out and share with our kiddos and yours too!  So, here is our liturgical run down for this week:

Tuesday, Sept.27 - Saint Vincent de Paul
Saint Vincent de Paul is the founder of the Congregation of the Missions (Vincentians) as well as the co-founder of the Daughters of Charity.  The son of a French peasant, he was ordained in 1600 and devoted his life to acts of charity.

Download an 12 page set of Notebooking pages on Saint Vincent de Paul from our notebooking page or download a Saint biography learning card on St. Vincent de Paul from our saint biography learning card collection.

Wednesday,  Sept. 28 - Saint Wenceslaus
You may have heard of St. Wenceslaus, King of Bohemia in the 10th century, from the Christmas carol written by John Mason Neale and published in 1853.  Wenceslaus was raised in the faith by his grandmother although his mother and brother were opposed to Christianity.  He intended on having his son take his thrown and rule with his strong beliefs in Christianity but his brother plotted against him and killed him in an ambush while the good king was on his way to Holy Mass.

For a great learning activity:  go over the lyrics or sing the carol - which is usually sung on Dec.26th for the feast of St. Stephen, who is mentioned in the lyrics.  It gives us such a great insight into the heart of this noble saint. Here is our printable version of the lyrical story of St. Wenceslaus.

Thursday, Sept. 29 - The Transcendent Trio (Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel and Saint Raphael)
This special trio of arch angels are part of the group of seven archangels who stand before God.  They are recognized and venerated in both the Christian and Jewish Faith.  This special day was once called Michaelmas in honour of St. Michael, but now this day celebrates this well known trio who are well known to intercede and protect human beings on earth.

Find out more about them and see our list of printable Resources for the Transcendent Trio.

Friday, Sept. 30th - Saint Jerome Feast Day
We love Saint Jerome in our home.  Most know that St. Jerome is responsible for us having the Bible today.  You can learn lots about St. Jerome and his accomplishments with our resources.
Learn about this great saint with a Little Lesson packet on St. Jerome.  And then check out our fun printable Resources on Saint Jerome including a mini-book, notebooking pages and more.

Have a great week!

Help Learners Remember Famous Scientists Easily

Some learners, young or old, can get easily overwhelmed by science.  Trying to remember who did what when and for what purpose can easily drain the excitement, especially if you are using a challenging prepared curriculum.  This feeling of being overwhelmed can show itself as apathy toward the subject as a whole.
If your child is apathetic about science, perhaps offering a new way of dealing with information can help them enjoy or even embrace this very wide and encompassing subject.
To aid in learning science, we suggest trying Our Learning Cards for Science.  We have just posted 32 new famous scientists biography cards with many more sets in the works.  Downloadable in sets of eight, these cards allow children to fill in information about each scientist named.

The cards themselves are easy to use once downloaded.  Simply print them out, fill them in, cut apart and then fold and glue.  We like to laminate our finished cards so that they can be used for review throughout the year.  These newly added sets were requested by one of our kiddos who is using a very rigorous program this year for the first time.  We thought we'd try something new for her, but by week two the familiar, "Mom can you make me something for this?" was heard through the house again.  Somethings never change, no matter how old they get.

Click HERE to see our Famous Scientists Learning Cards.

I hope this helps make your science learning more enjoyable and less intimidating!

Pentecost Marks the End of Easter. Now what do we do? Let St. Anthony and the CCC help.

What do you have planned for your spiritual year?

With the celebration of Pentecost, the Easter season will officially come to a close. We are now reassured of God's love and our forthcoming eternal life illustrated through Christ's resurrection. With Pentecost we recognize our call to become disciples of Christ and display our allegiance and love to God through our actions. The challenge for each one of us will be to remember Easter all year through. Mother church helps us with this task by focusing our spiritual attention on different aspects of our faith. We call this the Dedication of the months.

Here are the areas that Mother Church suggests we should focus on yearly basis by month:

January - The Holy Name of Jesus
February - The Passion
March - St. Joseph
April - The Resurrection
May - The Blessed Virgin
June - The Sacred Heart
July - The Precious Blood
August - The Assumption
September - The Holy Cross
October - The Rosary
November - The Poor Souls (Holy Souls in Purgatory)
December - Advent (The Coming of Christ)
If you need a little reminder of these days, feel free to download our Learning Card on the Dedications of the Month. With two different cards per page, it is paired with the card for the Mysteries of the Rosary.

Click HERE to download this card and so other faith building cards.

Although we are given a monthly focus, there are still tons of opportunities throughout the year to focus on different rich aspects of our Faith. We recall different mysteries of the Rosary - The Annunciation, The Assumption, Easter, Christmas and many others. We also recall the wonderful faithful works of the holy saints. One such saint that has a special place in our little homeschool is St. Anthony of Padua. His feast day is June 13th. We have put together a page with fun printable resources to help you celebrate the feast day of this saint with your family or classroom too.

Click HERE to visit our page on St. Anthony now.

Another way to celebrate your faith daily is through learning and living the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church). We can do this very simply by knowing what God expects of us and being willing to do His will. Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog has created a quick reference sheet to help us all remember and learn the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the Lord's prayer. This sheet can be used in a number of ways. It can be a reference sheet. It can be cut apart and put on flashcards for ordered play or matching play. It could be attached in an F3 folder or used in a unit study for lesson reinforcement. These are just a few ideas.

Find this and other faith builders at Shell's page HERE.

We hope that your spiritual life is somehow enriched and enlivened with the use of our free printables.

Blessings,

A Must Have Timeline Featuring the Composers

Composer timeline is sure to be that fun little extra your homeschool music learning sessions are craving

Timelines are always a popular way of learning all kinds of different material for just about any style learner.  Classical, Charlotte Mason style, hands-on or even traditional learners can all find something useful in finding out about who the master composers were, when they lived, and in which musical period they created their masterpieces.

In many of our religious services we hear beautiful hymns some of which are based on, derived from or created works of the master composers.  God Created Earth and Heaven, which is created from the melody of  Ode to Joy by Ludwig van Beethoven, is just such a hymn.  My children could immediately see the importance of the composers, once they heard this hymn sung years ago.  After just a bit of research, we further learned that many musicians created works inspired by God or their faith.  Of course, this is not true of all composers, but each composer has made a significant contribution to our musical heritage.
Timeline Sample Pieces

To help bring the composers to life for younger learners, we have created a Little Timeline of Composers which features 26 different composers as well as includes one space for another composer of your choice which may not have been included in our resource offering.  Timeline picture cards of each composer are provided with their name, birth and death details, as well as the musical period of their works.  The lines for affixing the cards are simple, bright and colourful.  Set-up instructions are included as well as a very handy composer reference sheet to help you remember the order and details of the composers.

Timeline Sample
Timelines are always popular with homeschoolers and our special creations seem to be favourites of our regular visitors to our resource website and blog.  We are certain that this one will become a favourite too.  As an added extra, we have created matching Biography Learning Cards featuring the composers.  You will also find a few additional composers available who are not part of the timeline unit to inspire you to add one composer of your own selection to the timeline.  We have left a blank card specifically for this purpose.

Now, if you are thinking the only thing that would make this project even better is matching notebooking sheets, we were thinking that same thing too! :)   Twenty-one page notebooking sets for each composer and their music period are on the way.  About half of them are created and we will work on the rest of the sets to perhaps post later in the week.

Learn more and download the Little Timeline of Composers.
See all of Our Timeline Resources.

If you know another homeschooling family or teacher who could benefit from this resource, please feel free to introduce them to our blog and website.  We would appreciate it and they hopefully will too.

Resources to Help Teach About the Annunciation

Fun resources help children of all ages celebrate the most beautiful event of the Annunciation.

On Friday, we will celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation.  In honour of this very special and historical event, many of us will read the Gospel, pray the Hail Mary prayer or even the rosary.  As we reflect on the Virgin's Mary answer to the call of our Lord for obedience, trust, devotion and love, let us too, be willing to say a hope filled, YES, to our call of service to God, our children, and one another.

We have just uploaded a new page to the main resource site that celebrates the Mystery of the Annunciation with lots of resources that you may find helpful to use this week or any week in your little homeschool, Bible study or CCD class.

Our resource list includes mini-books, notebooking sheets, games, puzzles, learning cards, trading cards and more.  Here are just a few samples.

We hope you find something useful and enjoyable to help bring understanding of the Annunciation to the hearts and minds of your little learners.

Click HERE to visit our new page - Free Resources to Help Children Learn About the Annunciation.

If you can think of someone else who might be able to benefit from our FREE resources - a fellow homeschooler, a catechist from your parish, or even a friend who is just beginning to ponder homeschooling their children - why not send them on over to see how easy it is to let God permeate our teaching and lessons. :)

Our Learning Cards are Growing - New Phonics Cards Sets Are Ready

New Animal Families learning cards help to teach phonics and reading.

As we eluded to last week, we are currently expanding our Animal Word Families resources to include more families and additional subjects such as spelling, faith study, writing and science.  Today we uploaded the main collection of phonics cards we will be using in this little learning adventure.  Find printable learning flashcards that list words by many popular phonogram families.  Each word family has been assigned an animal that somehow matches to a word in the word list.  The matching word has an asterisk as a clue for learners.  This little feature will be used to start discussions about the animal highlighted.

Feel free to use these independent of the coming lessons.  They are great for reading review and phonetic reference, not to mention, they are really fun and cute.  To use these cards, simply print out, cut apart on the lines, fold in half and glue.  Laminate for longevity and durability.  Here are a few more sample cards.

See all seventeen sets of these resources on their new page HERE.

Look for more resources to come shortly.  :)

Our moment of thought today is inspired by the life of St. Nicholas:

"Why did you give us the gold?" the father asked.
"Because you needed it," Nicholas answered.
"But why didn't you let us know who you were?" the man asked again.
"Because it's good to give and have only God know about it."

-Christmas Prayers and Customs, Regina Press, Edited by Rev. Victor Hoagland, C.P.

Do you know another homeschooling family or teacher who could use our FREE resources?  Why not drop them a line and invite them to come over for our daily December goodies?  Your thoughtfulness might be just what they need today! :)

A Few New Little Latin Resources

New worksheet and flash card manipulatives for a little Latin practice.

Today we offer some very useful resources from Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle for those of us studying Latin.  These resources correspond to chapters 21-23 of Getting Started With Latin by W. Linney but can be quite useful even if you are not using this specific program.  Flashcards help to solidify word meanings and appropriate endings which can be tricky, even for us bigger learners. :)  Michelle has also included a nice review worksheet that is simply yet very effective and fun.

Thanks so much Michelle for sharing your time and talents with us all!!

The Beauty of Prayer Copywork and Prayer Resources

Prayer Resources to Use for Copywork

If you are a Charlotte Mason style learner, you are all too familiar with the idea of copywork.   Copywork is simply when you have children imitate and copy letters, words, sentences and then paragraphs to learn handwriting and content.  Copywork can start out with letters, numbers or words.  We have many worksheets that have been requested that are based on this concept.  Children start off tracing and move forward to independent writing.  This process can sometimes be repeated when cursive writing is being learned.  However, many families may not realize the beauty that this little charming gem can provide to their children's spiritual growth.

I recently received some beautiful copywork from one of my children for my birthday.  It was the prayer taught to us by the angels, the Hail Mary.  It was beautifully written and decorated in a way that was fit for our Holy Mother.  Then I received a copywork book mark with a mini-holy card of our Lord Jesus as the Good Shepherd on the front and a great matching Bible verse of John 10:27-30 on the back.  Again is was lovely and will be cherished for years to come.

What you choose to use as copywork is just as important as the writing itself.  Might I humbly suggest using prayers as copywork?  They help to solidify the faith in young hearts, teach grammar so eloquently, and the efforts and work toward perfecting their imitation teach patience, reverence and align young souls to many early saints including St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Jerome.

We offer many resources to help you in this endeavour.

Find a fairly large collection copywork worksheets including prayers (some are in English and some are in Latin), letters, number words, early reading words, saint quotes, and more.  Click Here to see our collection now.

Consider downloading some of our Learning Flashcards for prayers that can easily be printed and laminated for prayer card use.  These are always a favourite with children and they are perfect for CCD class use as well.  All cards can be printed out in grey scale if colour ink is an issue.  Click Here to see our learning cards now.

If you are looking for prayers for children that you can read online, you can find our online collection here with some of the most popular prayers for Catholic to know.  Click Here to visit that page now.

We also have printable versions of prayers for children.  These little sheets are perfect for CCD class use, to put in the front of folders, laminate for reference during family prayer time or to keep in a binder.  Many families and catechists really like these resources.  Click Here to see our prayer sheets now.

We hope you find these resources useful for your family or religious education class.

Learning Cards to Help Reinforce the States of Matter

Pictures + Text + Play = Smiles and Learning

Learning cards can come in all styles and sizes.  The best are those that really draw the user into the content or that prompt the child to reach for it over and over again.  Picture learning cards do just that.  Today we offer a set of  picture learning cards from Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle about the 4 states of matter - solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.

These are your basic print it out, cut apart and glue back to back type cards.  Very simple to make and use.  Science themed cards are always great because they aren't all that popular on the market as say math or phonics flashcards and can be difficult to buy.  So here's a freebie set on the states of matter.

This shared resource prompts us to upload the F3 activity for states of matter.  We told you that we are necessity oriented.:)  Stop by tomorrow to get the States of Matter F3 pieces.
