7 Sacraments Mobile and Lesson

Here's what we did in my CCD class last week to begin covering the seven sacraments. Like it? It is a lesson and art project in one. It took us about 50 minutes to do the lesson and finish the art part. I finally wrote out the formal directions so that you can download it for your own Religious Ed., CCD or home use now.

What We Found When We Got Back From Vacation

Going away on holidays is always nice.  Coming home can be a bit of a downer, however, as we all accept that we will return to our normal everyday activities and then, of course, there is the laundry from the trip and such.

Yesterday, as I turned on my computer for the first time in a week, I was completely delighted to find three new resources waiting for me to share with you from Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog.

Yippee!!!

Little Lesson on the Parts of a Flower
Sample Parts of a Flower Reference Sheet
Help the kiddos enjoy the summer flowers in your yard or on your nature walks even more with her Little Lesson on the Parts of a Flower.  This seven page resource is a great opportunity for the children to put together the parts of a flower.  She offers a few different ways you may want to use this resource either for mounting over and over or for gluing into your nature notebook for a one time use.  So cute and very hands on.

Little Lesson Marriage and Christ as the Bridegroom Pt.II
If you enjoyed the first part of this lesson last month, then you'll want to download this second part of what is hoped to be a four series.   This fourteen page installment entitled, "Marriage: Hosea and Israel's divorce of her Adonai," is a great resource to use with your tweens and teens as you begin to introduce the true essence of the sacrament of marriage by examining the behaviour of the prophet Hosea.  Jesus' view of marriage is also discussed as well.

I love that Shell has included those little questions that force you to think about the content, deeply.  For example, she poses this question:

"But does the fact that God made a "marital covenant" with Israel make any difference to how we should consider marriage in our own families?"
She then goes on to thoughtfully answer the question with relevant scripture notations and quotations.

As usual, you will find a solid text, Bible notations, references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, opportunities for discussion, and notebooking sheets.  I also LOVE the "Watch our for that Pitfall" notations.

Little Colouring Sheet to Honour the Son and His Mother
For the younger set, Shell has also created a colouring sheet featuring the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary together on one sheet.  Very cute.

Little Lesson on the Sacrament of Marriage Part I

Marriage and Christ as the Bridegroom

The current marriage statistics in North America suggested that over half of today's marriages will fail and end in divorce.  This is a sad and frightening statistic.  As Catholics we recognize marriage as a sacrament - an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.   We also know that once we receive the Sacrament of Marriage we are bound to our spouses until parted by death.

The Catholic Church believes that the Sacrament of Marriage cannot be dissolved; this goes back to the Council of Trent.  In certain and grave instances one could possibly be eligible for an annulment, but it is a very specific, detailed and time consuming process which is in total contrast to a simple civil divorce which many people use as a way out.  In our Lord's eyes and the eyes of the Church we are still married even if we decide to simply obtain a civil divorce.  If we further decide to take another partner out of wedlock or civilly remarry, we are committing a grave mortal sin.  So how can we prevent this tragedy from needing to occur?  Very simply put, learn what marriage REALLY is.  It really is an amazingly awesome gift from God.

Having recently taken an intense course on the Theology of the Body (TOB),  I along with other parishioners and our pastor, listened to a wonderful passionate lessons on what it means to be married.  It was phenomenal and delivered by Fr. Alan Boisclair whose assigned mission it is to bring the knowledge, truth and understanding of the TOB to parishes and priests in North America.  Pope John Paul II was way ahead of his time when he began giving his Wednesday addresses teaching humanity about the sacred union of marriage through the TOB.  And believe me, if we all knew what marriage was intended to be for us by God, we would teach our children to discern and choose partners more carefully and look to marriage as something to be cherished and celebrated for really we are actually entering into a marriage of male, female and the Creator.

Today I share a wonderful little lesson that Shell of  Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog has written about the sacrament of marriage.  This is part one of her lesson which she hopes to continue over the summer.  I think it is very well done and helps introduce young people to this wonderful sacrament in a knowledgeable and reverent light looking to scripture as a base.  Last month she focused on the sacrament of the priesthood or Holy Orders and this month she gives us the alternative to the call to religious life.  This lesson entitled, Marriage and Christ the Bridegroom is twelves pages long and includes the lesson text, images, a Bible bit, notebooking pages and some great thoughts and prompts for discussion including:
Who was the first bridegroom and priest?
Who is the second Adam and how was He a bridegroom and priest?
What is the difference between a Covenant and a contract?
In what way does Israel "divorce" God?

Expect that you will learn a bit of history of the sacrament and having your Bible handy will enhance your understanding of some key truths of our faith, which sadly go unacknowledged  by many.  This lesson is first in what Shell hopes to be a series of at least three parts including a lesson on Hosea and Jesus' Words in the Gospel of Matthew and another lesson covering the purpose of marriage.

As a side note:  If you are not familiar with the TOB let me recommend a few resources for you.  These should be on every homeschooling family's bookshelf and they will help you immensely in understanding God's plan for our lives in the union of marriage and familyhood.

Let me preface that in Man and Woman He Created Them, the first part of the book explains how the book got to be as it was translated and organized.  Start reading the text portion and don't worry about the front portion as it is very difficult reading.  Simply take each morsel paragraph by paragraph and you will see the truth of our Lord unfold before your eyes.

This is not an easy read, but it is so worthwhile and will help you with the children in those most important teen years when questions arise about vocations, dating, sex, marriage and procreation.  As they begin to think about dating we want them to embrace the idea of chastity; as they think of career we want them also to consider religious life; as they think about love we want them to unite it to God; when they talk about marriage we want them to think about the fruits of their love.  This book will equip you to help with these tasks.  You can also read these from the EWTN archives here.

Love and ResponsibilityLove and Responsibility by Pope John Paul II

This is a literary gem that will really help parents prepare for leading their children into adulthood.  Young adults will find this book helpful as well and it too was recommended in our TOB course.  It is a good sized read that will engage readers as only Pope John Paul the Great could. He covers everything from chastity, love, ethics, shame, continence, marriage, paternity, maternity, and so much more.

I hope you find these books very helpful in parenting and preparing your children for life.  They would also be great as background reading to accompany Shell's series of lessons on the sacrament of marriage.

Blessings,
Kalei

A Little Lesson to Learn the History of the Priesthood

A brief overview of the Biblical roots of the priesthood and its nature for discussion and some notes for lapbooking.

Having just recently taken an intense course on the Theology of the Body focusing on the papal teachings and wisdom of Pope John Paul II,  I listened to our speaker, Fr. Alan Boisclair, explain about the tremendous love that calls a man to the priesthood.  It was completely inspiring.  So I can tell you that I was completely excited to learn that a Little Lesson on a Brief History of the Priesthood by Mum6kids, Shell, over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle was ready to help me shed even more light on the awesomeness of the priesthood for my kiddos.

This 34 page resource pack gives tons of interesting information about the sacrament of Holy Orders, more commonly known as the priesthood.  Expect to read all kinds of historical facts as well as a bit of history about the author and her spiritual journey.  Quite inspirational to see how God has worked in each of our lives.  The root question about the authority of the Church and  her pope and bishops is answered quite well in this introductory resource.

This lesson is thought provoking as almost all her Little Lessons are, but it is unique in that it lends itself very well to discussions utilizing coloured question prompts.  This meas that families can discuss this together and those who have already been confirmed or who are strong readers will find this a great independent read.  Shell has included some great go-alongs including notebooking sheets, lapbooking (F3) pieces and little pieces that could be used as writing prompts, flaps or timeline pieces.  Here are a few samples for you.

We look forward to using this lesson in our own little homeschool and invite you to do the same.

Thanks for all of your energy and love of our Faith, Shell!  God bless you and your family for all you do to bring and explain the faith to others.

New Resources to Help Teach About Sin and Forgiveness Based on the Parable of the Prodigal's Son and the Ten Commandments

New and Favourite Resources to Teach About the Prodigal's Son, Reconciliation, Sin and Forgiveness

As we prepare for our Lenten mission in our parish and enter into the final stretch towards preparation for First Reconciliation in my CCD class, I have created some new resources to help prepare children for their First Reconciliation by using the parable of the Prodigal's Son and the Ten Commandments.

As our Lord, Jesus Christ, told us the truth about our heavenly Father's ability to forgive us our sins through the parable of the Prodigal's Son, so too, it is important for children to be able to see the significance of the Ten Commandments as a way of recognizing one's own sin and thus better prepare to meet our Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation where sanctifying grace is to be poured into our souls.  It is great that children can chant out the Ten Commandments from memory, but they must be able to see the application of them to their lives in order to know and recognize their own sin.  If we recall, recognition of our sins is a crucial step to making a good confession.

Over the years I have tried to create a number of different kinds of resources to meet the needs of my kiddos as well as learners of varying ages and learning styles.  Some resources are in game format, others are in printable activities and still others are worksheets and note sheets.  Even if your child is not a big reader, there is sure to be something for them in the way of notebooking sheets or mini-books which encourage narration using words as well as their drawing skills.  The printable confession booklet is an awesome resource to help adults and children alike.  I hope you find our resources helpful and useful for your family or CCD or Religious Education class.

Here is a sampling of a few of the resources in our collection.

Let's Learn About the Sacraments

Learn about the seven Sacraments with a neat game and new F3 pieces.

This is the time of year when many parents (and catechists) begin really focusing on the seven sacraments, especially if their children are preparing for the reception of sacraments themselves.  This can sometimes be an overwhelming task for young hearts and minds.  To help children accomplish this task, I usually recommend using the New Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism.  This is a very well done and easy to understand presentation of the basics of the faith for young Catholics.
The New Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism

To go along with this resource, I created some F3(Flip, Flap & Fold) Pieces.  I simply ask the children to pick out a few things that they have learned about each sacrament and write it on the lines.  Then they cut out the rectangles, fold on the lines and glue the piece to create a single page book.  These can easily be glued into their Religious Ed. F3 folder or any other notebook, folder or project.  This allows you to see what the child finds most important about each individual sacrament.

Sample F3 Pieces

As a bonus, the F3 pieces go with our Sacrament Match-up Game. If you love Where's Waldo type games, art and your faith - then this is the game for you.

This game allows you to teach the seven sacraments using descriptive clues and art details from the The Seven Sacraments by Rogier Van der Weyden.  Details in the artwork reveal lots about our rich Catholic traditions through each of the sacraments. Each sacrament is highlighted and the children really enjoy trying to find the examples within this beautiful work.  Print out the pieces, cut apart, and laminate for durability.  This is a great game for use in CCD or religious education classes.   A full class period can be devoted to playing this game if teachers explain details and nuances of the faith as they go through each detail page and then the clues themselves.   Be forewarned, this is not as easy to complete as it looks.  Many times we can easily be stumped by the simplest clues.  Instructions are provided and a reference sheet is included to aid in game play.

I hope that this helps you in your sacramental prep or catechism review.

A Little Lesson on the Baptism of our Lord

Hot off the printer and straight to you in time for the weekend - a new Little Lesson on the Baptism of Jesus

This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord in the River Jordan by his cousin, John the Baptist.  There is so much richness in this event that speaks of the institution of the Sacrament of Baptism by Jesus himself.  In this event we also see the example of obedience that Christ has to his Father as well as the loving return that He has for him in the simple sentence:  "This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased."

Today we share A Little Lesson on the Baptism of Jesus resource from Michelle of the wonderfully refreshing blog, Thinking Love, No Twaddle.  This nine page resource has tons of great info and data, pictures of classic art for art study, notebooking sheets, questions for discussion, a suggested art project plus Bible references and an answer key.  It just doesn't get much better than that, especially because it is all for free!!

We just got this in from Michelle today and we wanted to make sure that you got it in time for the weekend or Monday - although you could use this at any time during the year or with a sacrament unit study.  One of my favourite things about this Little Lesson is that it includes so much info that you don't need to search though tons of other references to really understand what she is sharing.  It really is a self-contained lesson and that is a wonderful gift for us busy moms.  Thanks so much, Michelle!!

Easy Printable Booklet Helps Prepare Us for the Sacrament of Reconciliation

Brand new resource booklet is the perfect printable to help prepare young Catholics to meet our Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

As we have just entered into the third week of Advent, we are growing closer to Christmas as each day advances.  Part of our preparation for our Lord's coming is not only preparing our homes but also preparing our soul to meet Him as well.  One way many Catholics can spiritually prepare for Christmas is to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Children should also be included in this preparation if they have received this sacrament before or if they they are given the opportunity to receive it for the first time perhaps as part of their preparation to receive their First Holy Communion.

Since our own parish is getting ready for our seasonal penitential service tomorrow evening, we thought that this printable would be the perfect resource for families.  To help parents and catechists get their children ready for the reception penance, we have just finished creating a neat little printable booklet called, Meeting Our Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Simply print out the sheets, cut in half and fold pages in half.  This four sheet booklet is printed with four pages per sheet. Page numbers can be found at the bottom of the pages.

Stack the folded pages (as shown left) in order according to the page numbers and then sandwich them between the folded cover page, with the title facing outward.

Staple at left where designated with 3 dotted lines.

The booklet provides an introduction to Sacrament of Confession, the dialogue that occurs between the penitent and the priest, popular prayers, as well as an examination of conscience based on the Ten Commandments.  There is even a little page to put some notes or thoughts you may have.

This booklet is perfect for CCD classes or first time penitents.

We hope that this resource can help Catholics everywhere prepare to meet our Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
