Teaching Grammar and Reviewing Theology with the Apostles' Creed Prayer

As promised, we have been focusing our home learning efforts on the learning and memorizing the new form of the Apostles' Creed.  To that end we have done grammar study, art work, memorization, copywork, catechism and spelling too.  I will pass along what we have done briefly and give you links to gather the resources for yourself from the new faith area of our resource website.

Memorization
To help with memorization of the Creed and help children learn some of the other prayers said at Mass, I made some new Learning Prayer Cards sets.  The new form of the Apostles' Creed is featured in one of the learning card sets as well as the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel for Protection, which is said after daily masses.  Another learning card set features the Sanctus or Holy. Holy, Holy in Latin and also in English.  The new form is provided.

Grammar
In the grammar department I typed out the new form of the Apostles' Creed as well as the old form and put them on separate sheets.  We then began comparing and contrasting the prayers grammatically.  The Apostles' Creed prayer sheets (plus the text from this lesson) are very useful for reference with many of the activities below.  We made some unique observations.
  1. The new form has only two sentences.  The old form has nine sentences.   Don't believe me?  See for yourself. Together the kids pointed out the subject and predicate of each of the long sentences.  Presented in a Who or what/Does what format, it is very simple to pick out the subject (noun portion) and predicate (verb portion).  You will also see the change in the number of pronouns as well.  Because of the reduction of sentences, there isn't the need to use the pronoun "he" very often.
  2. The new form uses quite a few semi-colons and to a lesser degree, commas.  This is the perfect opportunity to highlight the functions and differences in both of these punctuation marks.  The semi-colon is used to separate complex ideas within the sentence - in its simplest explanation, but using your favorite grammar text will help you give further examples of proper use of both the semi-colon and comma.
  3. Another addition to this form of the Apostles' Creed includes the use of italics to signal the need for reverence to be given by the person or persons praying. The line which uses italics is: "who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary,"
  4. This is a great opportunity to discuss plural nouns.
Apostles (more than one apostle)
Apostle's (belonging to one apostle)
Apostles' (belonging to more than one apostles or a group of apostles)

Note the position and proper use of apostrophe.*

Spelling/Handwriting
For our spelling practice this week I selected ten words that best represent the prayer to use as spelling list words for the week.  With only ten words, it can be easily accomplished by kiddos.  I also created a set of Ten Words about the Apostles' Creed copywork sheets.  This set includes trace work in print and cursive as well as a blank version for learners with better handwriting skills.  I simply printed out one sheet to use daily and gave a quick spelling check at the end of the week.

For other copywork, handwriting practice and also as an aide to help learn the prayer, I created copywork sheets for the Apostles' Creed.  Styles include a set for the Apostles' Creed in trace print, a set for the Apostles' Creed in trace cursive, and for more advanced writers, the Apostles' Creed in non-trace style.  With only a few lines per page, one sheet could be given out daily until the entire prayer is completed.

Catechism
One of the easiest things to do with the Apostles' Creed is to pick out the twelve points on which our faith is based as it was proclaimed from the twelve apostles so many centuries ago.  Use the prayer sheets from above to look throughout the prayer.  Have children underline the points with different colors.  Here are the points distinguished with different colors below.  You can also find these in the CCC as well.

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.  Amen.

Art
These coloring art sheets help to distinguish and illustrate some of the important parts of the Apostles' Creed.  Each sheet gives a title, summary of what is occurring in the image as well as a line from scripture or the prayer itself.  Here are the sheets I used:

The Holy Trinity Joined by the Saints Coloring Sheet - This sheet depicts the Holy Trinity but also the communion of saints.  See if you can note the heavenly Father, the Son (the lamb) and the Holy Spirit (dove), the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Queen of Heaven , St. Joseph, St. Peter, St. Stephen, St. Mary Magdalen, the Holy Innocents, St. Michael the Archangel, St. Gabriel the Archangel, St. John the Baptist, the terms "Ave" (Hail) and Ecce Agnus Dei (Behold the Lamb).

Easter, The Resurrection Coloring Sheet - This last sheet features a portion of the Apostles' Creed in image and words.  Mary Magdalene meets Jesus just outside His tomb.  The angel is present as well.  Note the beautiful pious halo that is above Christ's head.

So, this is what we did this week to begin getting ready for the transition for the New Roman Missal.

I hope you find this lesson very helpful!

Blessings,
Kalei

The Apostles' Creed is Changing. Are you ready?

Apostles' Creed Prayer Mini-book
Advent marks the beginning of the new liturgical year as well as the institution of the New Roman Missal.  We are fortunate to be experiencing history in such a unique and heartfelt way.  There will be quite a few changes in the Mass including postures, prayers, responses, and music.  I will be sharing new resources, as I get them web ready, to help bring children (and even a few parents) closer to their faith this coming year.

One thing that many people do not realize is that the words to the Apostles' Creed prayer are changing.  The new translation should bring the English words closer to the Latin translation and will definitely cause us to pray more carefully and with a new kind of energy.  Oh, it is exciting!

Many of you who have been with us for the past few years know that we have resources that pertain directly to the Apostles' Creed.  Today I went through and updated all of our current resources that contain the words to the Apostles' Creed - Put it in Order prayer game, Prayers I Should Know Sheet, our printable Reconciliation booklet for children or adults and our Create an Apostles' Creed Prayer mini-book.  That being said, children will need to learn the new changes especially if you pray the rosary at home or use it in your parish instead of the Nicene Creed, which , too, has changed.

I will be featuring new resources including learning cards, copywork, coloring sheets, and prayer sheets to help teach about the new Apostles' Creed in the next bit - as soon as I finish the lessons with my own kiddos at home.  :)

Blessings,
Kalei

Can the Holy Souls Help Teach Your Children Math? YES!!

Many have already begun praying the Novena for the Holy Souls this week.  November 2nd is All Souls Day and kicks off the month that Holy Mother Church dedicates to the Church Suffering or Church Expectant comprised of the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

As part of the communion of saints, we are implored to remember and pray for these Holy Souls who suffer to perfection in purgatory as they await the beatific vision of our Lord in heaven.  With our prayers for them, we can help them to become part of the Church Triumphant more quickly.  For this task, they are grateful and will intercede for us out of love and thanksgiving.

So, how can they help teach our children math?  Easy.  Take on our Holy Souls Prayer Project for the month of November (although you can do this any and every month, if desired) and pray for the Holy Souls daily.

It is said that each time the prayer for the Holy Souls is earnestly prayed, 1,000 souls will be released from purgatory to join God in heaven.  This project asks children to keep track of how many souls they and their family members have helped throughout the month by using multiples of 1,000.

Our project pack includes the Prayer for the Holy Souls, a cute charting sheet, and prayer pieces.  It is my favourite prayer project of the year and I hope that you will join me and my family as we dedicate our prayer life to the Holy Souls in November.

F3 Folder Explains the Sign of the Cross, Holy Water and the Sanctuary Lamp

Ever find that you are driving your car, begin thinking about something and before you know it, you are home but don't remember getting there?  I can understand how prayer can sometimes be like that.  You start praying and before you know it, your mind has drifted off into thinking about something else.  What's worse is saying a prayer instead of praying the prayer.

I wanted to do a lesson on the powerful meaning of the Sign of the Cross.  As a people of God, we begin almost every prayer with a praising sign of adoration and belief in the Holy Trinity, but do we remember what we are really doing when we enter the church, dip our fingers into the Holy Water and make and pray the sign of the cross?

I wanted to reinforce this most basic Christian sign with a lesson that:

Illustrated the sign of the cross
Provided the prayer in both English and Latin
Explained the sign of the cross and why we use it
Gave an explanation of the use of holy water as we enter/leave a church
Encouraged children to look for symbolism in our faith
Showcased the sanctuary lamp as a symbol of Christ's presence.

My latest F3 (Flip, Flap and Fold) Folder called, The Sign of the Cross, does all of these things in a very simple and fun way.

This nine page FREE down loadable lapbook style resource will provide just about everything you need to create this F3 Folder for use in the CCD classroom, but also in your own little homeschool or co-op.  It is very interactive lending itself quite well as a discussion starter.  The file includes all the sheets, pieces and a teacher's answer key as well.  See our video for more instruction on how to make and use this resource.

Let's Learn About St. Faustina and Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet

Divine Mercy Sunday is coming up.  Are you ready?

Pope John Paul II declared the first Sunday after Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday.  This is a great opportunity for us to pray together for the remission of sins.  This wonderful devotion was revealed and given to St. Sister Faustina - as many call her - first in the form of an image and then the chaplet devotion itself was dictated to her by our Lord, Jesus, in one of His many visions to the young mystic.

As a family, we usually try to observe Divine Mercy Sunday in our parish where we pray the divine mercy chaplet as a community and we venerate the relic we are so fortunate to have of this wonderful saint who knew and loved our Lord so intimately.

Although the kiddos are a bit familiar with St. Faustina and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, which is prayed regularly in our parish, we wanted to do a bit more research on this saint who felt her first call to religious life at age seven.  To help our children explore more about St. Faustina we have created some printable resources including the printable saint trading card (featured above), new saint biography trading cards, notebooking sheets, and more.  You can find all of our resources for this saint conveniently located on one page plus you will find the directions on how to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet there as well.

We hope you find these resources useful in some way.

A LIttle Latin Lesson on the Pater Noster (Our Father)

New Little Latin Lesson helps kids to learn our Lord's Prayer

Looking for a hands on way to study the Pater Noster or an easy way to spice up your Latin review?  Then this Little Lesson shared by Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle might be just what you are looking for.

Print these sheets out and cut the pieces apart.  (I like to use card stock.)  There is a reference prayer sheet as well as prayer pieces in Latin and English There is also lovely little copywork page to practice writing the entire prayer, a few lines, or even a few key words from the prayer.

A bit older children could use this lesson independently as a Montessori type activity if they use the prayer reference sheet.  Some quality mama time could be given here as well using the pieces.  In fact, you could play matching games using English to Latin or even Latin to Latin or English to English if you printed out two sets of the card pieces.

This packet is six pages.  Here are a few sample pages from this lesson.

Thanks, Michelle for sharing this little prayerful gem with us all!

Just added - The Decade a Day Spiritual Bouquet is Now Available in Spanish! :)

NEW - Christmas Themed Spiritual Bouquet is now available in Spanish as well as English.

We thought that our readers may really take to this spiritual bouquet which combines prayer, charity and a hot cup of tea as a good Christmas gift.  We were really excited and blessed to have Xhonane from familiacatolica.org offer to translate this resource for us so that even more families could give the gift of prayer to one another this season.

We have changed all of the pieces and the booklets as they have been translated into Spanish.  We hope that you find this useful and the perfect gift for that someone on your list.   And don't forget that the Christmas season is still celebrated in Christmastide.  There is no rush to stop celebrating the birth of our Lord or leave his side.  There is no hurry to put away the nativity scene; in fact we keep one of our manger sets out all year round.

Thanks again, Xhonane!!  You can visit her blog here.

Give the Gift of Prayer. Printable Decade - A - Day Spiritual Bouquet is the Perfect gift for all!!

Beautiful but easy family craft combines prayer and tea and makes prayer a meaningful gift to others!!

A few years ago we created this craft to give to our pastor for Christmas.  We thought it was a wonderful gift as many pastors and priests are forgotten after the Masses are said and the final blessings are given.  We like to think of our pastor as our friend, our shepherd, and also as part of our family.  Daily prayer was good, but the children wanted a little extra special way to pray for him.  Thus our Decade-A-Day Gift of Prayer was created.  We have since reorganized this project so that it is easier to make, fits into a mailer envelope, and is a bit more polished.  See our photos below to see how it all works.

In this spiritual bouquet, the sender(s) will pray a single decade of the rosary daily for a selected person.  The recipient, in return, will relax with a cup of tea daily, spiritually recharging themselves knowing that others are praying for them.  As my pastor just recently reminded me, rest and relaxation are a very important part of our lives, even though we tend to forget to schedule them into our daily or weekly routine.

For this project you will need:
5 Pre-packaged tea bags
Scissors or Cutter
Exacto Knife
Glue stick or double-sided clear tape
Templates - download below
Stapler

Preparation for Tea Bags:

Cut out “t” shaped tea bag template on outer lines.  Write the date on the days you intend to pray for the recipient of the gift.  Fold all tea bag flaps toward the center with blank sides together. Glue or tape flaps into place. Let dry very well. Place one tea bag into prepared tea bag cover.

Preparation for Booklet:
Print out page templates. Cut in half.  Using an exacto knife carefully cut the black dotted lines. Fold each
template page on grey dotted lines with print side out.

Stack pages in order. Place the cover over the stack and staple on left side at the marks.

Affix the appropriate tea bag, in its prepared cover, into the slits in order by dates selected. You will notice that the graphics match the portion of the rosary said on specific day.  For example, the Nativity will be your first tea bag designated for Monday.  Tuesday will be one of the Sorrowful Mystery covers. Wednesday will be the bag with the Resurrection, Thursday the Last Supper, and Friday the other depiction representing the Sorrowful Mysteries.

This gift can be perfect for just about anyone.  How about remembering any of these nice folks who serve you throughout the year?

Your pastor or priest
Parents, grandparents, or other relatives
Godparents of your children
Your child's catechist or teacher
The Parish Secretary or custodian
Choir members in your church
Those who help you throughout the year - neighbours or friends
An elderly member of your parish
A recent widow or widower
Your physician, dentist, pharmacist or caregiver
Your veterinarian

There are three versions available.  Each one includes a special written introduction.  One version is sent from a single individual, one is sent from a family, and the last is blank space for you to do all of the writing.
This is the text from the single version:

Today I thought of you and was so thankful to have you in my
life. You are so special to me that I wanted to give you the best
gift I could think of - prayer!!

I will pray for you for five days and dedicate a decade of the
rosary every day for you until a rosary has been completed.

So, relax with a cup of hot tea each day knowing that I am
praying in thanksgiving just for you. May God Bless you always!!

The family version is almost identical with the exception of a change in the pronouns.

We hope that you find this spiritual gift the perfect little something for that someone special.  The kids can help put it together and it doesn't cost very much to make at all.

Decorate Your Favourite Area in Your Home With a Prayer Garland

Prayer is a wonderful way to bring the true spirit of the season to the hearts and mind of all who visit your home this season.

Prayer is simply lifting our hearts and minds to God.  There are many different purposes and methods of prayer, each bringing to light our thoughts about our Lord and the intimate relationship we have with Him.  During Advent we are called to prepare ourselves in mind, body and spirit to receive and rejoice in the birth of our Lord.  One way to rejoice in the hope of our Saviour is to pray for others.  We could pray in thanksgiving for their presence in our lives, in supplication for their needs, in contemplation for their friendship, services, or talents that God has allowed them to share with us or we could even pray for heavenly eternal rest for a loved one who has passed away.

As we get busier with tasks of the Advent and Christmas season, we can often forget to pray for others.  We remember our own families because we see them daily, but we may forget others who may really need our prayers or who have helped us throughout the year like our pastor, fellow parishioners or homeschooling families, or even our neighbours who have mowed our yard or helped shovel the snow for us once in a while. Why not create a prayer garland to help remind you and your children to pray for others.  It is very simple to do, it looks very festive and it can be a great gift to others.

To complete this project simply trace and cut out the right and left hands of various members of your family on green and red construction paper.  Cut out multiple sets of each persons hands.  Overlap and glue into place forming an evergreen style garland.  Affix to the wall with putty, a thumbtack, or rings of removable masking tape or painters tape.

Now for the stars.  You can either use stars that you trace onto yellow construction paper or use the Star of David template we provided below and have the kids simply colour them in; then cut them out.  They will be affixed to the garland once it is put up on the wall.

Write the name of someone you wish to pray for on each individual star.  Using red ink or green ink to write on the yellow stars stands out quite well.

You will see in the photo above that we added a few embellishments to make the project even more festive - some ribbon and a few honeycomb paper bells.  Feel free to be creative.  You may decide to make a full garland or just parts as we have in our sample picture.

Note:  If you put your garland around a window in your kitchen and you tend to cook a lot, the heat and condensation from the kitchen will cause the finger "needles" from your hand prints to curl a bit adding a very nice effect.

If you decide to place your garlands in the dining room or kitchen, you may even want to adopt praying for your "Christmas Stars" when you gather for meals.

We hope this helps you to keep a bit more relaxed and Christ-centered during this wonderful season.

Click Here to download the Star of David template page.

Prayer can be that gift of hope we all so desperately need in today's modern world. Perhaps you may want to reflect today on John 1:5
"And the light shineth in darkness: and the darkness did not comprehend it."

Family Prayer Project Helps Us Get Ready for November - The Month of the Holy Souls

Family prayer project helps us to remember that November is dedicated to the Church Expectant or Church Suffering.

Many years ago I bought a book at our parish mission from Tan Books.  It was tiny, cheap, and short so I figured I could finish reading it rather easily, so I bought it.  I was drawn to it by its title, "Read Me or Rue It" by Fr. Paul O'Sullivan.  How could I pass that by without wanting to know what was so important that one would give a book a title as strong as that?  It literally changed my life.  I began praying for the Holy Souls daily, learned about St. Gertrude and memorized the prayer our Lord shared with her.  The Holy Souls or Church Suffering have a very special place in my heart and our family prayer life.

Today I share one of my favourite prayer projects of the year.  It is called the Holy Souls Prayer Project.  This family project is designed to help children learn about love through praying for others especially those who can't help themselves.  One of the seven Spiritual Works of Mercy is to pray for the living and the dead. November is deemed the month dedicated to the Holy Souls. The poor souls in Purgatory need our help and you can be sure that they will remember us and pray for us in return as well. :)

This project is very simple.
Prayer Chart
Step 1: Print out the Prayer Chart to keep track of your family's prayers and the Holy Souls released through steadfast prayer throughout the month. This chart allows children to practice math skills as they see the great impact that their prayers have.  You may decided to use one chart per child or even one per family if that is easier.

Click Here to download the Prayer Chart.

Prayer Sheets

Step 2: Pray the prayer dictated to St. Gertrude by our Lord Jesus Christ as often as possible throughout the month. St. Gertrude was told that each time this prayer is devoutly said, 1,000 souls are released from purgatory.  If not already committed to memory, you can print out the prayer to release the Holy Souls. You can print it out in a plain .PDF (2 per sheet) like at right or use Our Learning Card for the this prayer.

Click Here to download the prayer sheet pictured at right.
Click Here to download the Our Learning Card style prayer card.

Gift of Prayer Counters
Step 3: Pray daily and keep track of your prayers and souls for the entire month of November using the Holy Souls Prayer Chart for older learners and the Gift of Prayer Counters for younger learners. can cut out and affix the Gift of Prayer Counters to a door, wall, bulletin board or window frame to keep track of how many souls they have helped to Heaven.  It's that simple.

Click Here to download the Gift of Prayer Counters.

We have a few other resources that can help you in this project including prayer copywork and a saint mini-book to help learn about St. Gertrude.  Click the links to see those resources now.

Don't forget you can pray for the Holy Souls on any day, in any month as well so you can repeat this project as often as desired.

If you enjoyed this family project and would like to perhaps explore other family projects that we have click Here.

May God bless you and those you pray for.

Let Your Fall Decorations Call You to Prayer

Fall decorations remind us to pray for one another

Fall signals the beginning of the hustle and bustle that is to come over the next three months.  We count our blessings as we are usually already in need and calling for more things - more time, more talent, more treasure, more teaching.  We can easily feel overwhelmed by all the tasks that we set up for ourselves to accomplish.  There is so much to do, prepare for, buy, cook, create, teach . . . and . . . remember in prayer.  We created this easy and inexpensive family prayer project to help us and our family stay focused on God's will and not our own.  It is to remind us to offer our daily vocation, "All for You, Lord."

You will need:
  • Washable tempera paint in fall colours - orange, green, red, yellow
  • Sheets of white paper - the larger the better.  Newspaper end-rolls work well.
  • Scissors
  • Removable scotch or painters tape
  • Washable black, fat marker
  • Fat tipped gold marker
Apply paint in blobs to the paper.  Using falling leaves as inspiration, have children finger paint until the desired fall effect is reached.  Then let the paper dry very well.  Our project used two large table sized sheets of paper as pictured here.

Using the black washable marker, trace your child's hands spread out as shown in the picture on the darkest parts of your picture.  This will represent a dried Maple leaf.  Trace hands with fingers close together on the lightest parts of your artwork to represent an Elm leaf.

Cut apart leaves using scissors.  Children can easily do this part.  The more helpers you have, the faster the cutting goes.  Don't worry about perfection, it's about the fun and time spent together.

Next, think about the people in your life that have asked for prayers or are in need of prayers.  Think of the ill, the less fortunate, relatives, ministry workers, other homeschooling families, and don't forget your pastor and the Holy Souls in Purgatory.  Write one intention on each of the Elm leaves.

Turn leaves over and affix tape loops to the back of the leaves.

Place the dark, Maple leaves in place first on your wall.  We recommend using a very high traffic area such as your kitchen or your learning area.  Then place the Elm leaves with the golden intentions over top of the Maple leaves.

As you pass by or gather for meals, remember to pray for those golden intentions.  Keep these up until Advent and add additional leaves as needed.

Don't let the festivities and busy-ness of the up coming holidays and seasons change your family focus.  Keep it in your heart to focus on your vocation and simply offer - All for You, Lord!!

Blessings,

That Resource Team

Resources to help celebrate St. Francis of Assisi's Feast Day on October 4th

Printable St. Francis Trading Card
Here are some learning goodies to help you learn about and celebrate St. Francis of Assisi's Feast Day.

St. Francis of Assisi is perhaps one of the most popular and well known saints in the world.  There is so much to tell about this holy hero of the past.  Many remember him for his association and gentleness with animals others recall the wonderful prayer of St. Francis which tells us specifically how to be better Christians, but I remember that St. Francis is the one responsible for the nativity scene as we know it today.  We offer these resources to help inspire young Catholics to learn more about this wonderful, beloved saint.

From our book study on In God's Garden by Amy Steedman, read and print a story about St. Francis of Assisi Here.  Listen to that story read Here.

Printable Prayer Page
This two per page prayer sheet colourfully displays the prayer of St. Francis in an easy to read and inviting way.  This would make great copywork too.  Find this and other printable prayer sheets at this link.

Saint Trading Card - Pictured above.
Find a saint trading card that highlights St. Francis of Assisi with one of his most famous quotes and a notation of his feast day as well.  They are printed with four cards per sheet.  Find this and other saint trading cards at the link above.

Use our eight page My Book Mini-book of St. Francis of Assisi to have children narrate the details of the life of this famous saint.  Prompted pages help keep learners on track.  Prompts include symbols, what makes this saint special, when would you call on this saint for intercession and more.  These books are always a hit with learners and are perfect for families who follow a Classical or Charlotte Mason learning style.  This resource is especially handy because it can be used with any resource you may already have on hand at home or can easily find online.  Download this and other books from this link.

If your child likes card learning, little narrations, or card collecting, then this resource may be just what you are looking for.  Paired with a Doctor of the Church, St. Therese of Lisieux, this sheet provides two cards in one.  Our children love using these little recall cards.  Simply print it out, fill it out, cut it out, fold and glue.  We laminate our cards for future game use and lots of handling.
