Two Resource Highlights: a Timeline Notebook to Study Catholic History in the 14th Century and an easy to print Academic Diary

Are you prepping for next year?  We are too, and I thought that these resources shared by Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog might be useful as you think about your needs and requirements for next year.  

St. Francis of Assisi reminded us to preach the Gospel at all times and to use words when necessary.   Perhaps you may be like me and need of some words to help you remember historical facts and especially those events dealing with the Catholic Church.  You can download and incorporate a five-page resource to create a 14th Century Timeline Notebook.  This resource offers a peek at key events of the 1300s. It begins with the 1300 Jubilee year when coins of Florence were accepted as first International currency and ends with the death of Death of Bl. Raymond of Capua in 1399. Catholic events are highlighted in blue, and space has been left to write about additional events of the 14th century. 


The second resource shared by Shell today is an Academic Diary for 2012-2013.  This 24 page printable resource can be printed single or double sided and can be the simple help you need to keep track of events in the church calendar, the liturgical year and, of course, your own daily or weekly activities.  The calendar runs from September 2012-August 2013.  The accompanying diary pages are laid out with a simple design allowing for lines and spaces and some poetic inspiration.

19th Century Timeline Notebook Gives a Great Catholic Perspective of the 1800s

Examine the events of history with this 19th Century Timeline Notebook lovingly created by Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle Blog. The nine-page resource serves to share world history as well as Catholic events from the 1800s with a running list of historical events - including the birth or death of specific saints, apparitions from our Blessed Mother, and more.

There are some very neat features in this resource.

-Spaces are available to create your own little notebook area to add additional events of the time period.
-Catholic events are highlighted in blue.
-Beautiful artwork is used in the backgrounds of many of the pages.
-A blank page is included for other events you may want to include immediately before or after the 19th Century.

This could serve as a wonderful addition to any history study or program.

LIttle Lesson is Perfect for Teaching About Heroism

Little lapbook lesson brings an old heroine to life.

Looking for a little side lesson to help bring a bit of extra history or geography to life while focusing on a truly heroic young lady?  If you wish it were a bit of a cut-n-paste, "doing something" learning activity too, then we may have just the thing for you and the kiddos.  Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle has just shared with us a little lesson she created about Grace Darling. 

I remember first reading about Grace Darling in Fifty Famous Stories Retold  by James Baldwin.  This was a beloved read-aloud that is very popular with Charlotte Mason Style learners.  We read it about four years ago and are getting ready to embark on a second reading this coming September.  This latest lesson from Shell is a perfect addition to your reading of the story entitled, simply, Grace Darling.

In this self-contained lesson you will find background information about the heroism of Grace Darling plus a few pages of lapbook pieces.  It is a great story and the pieces are inviting and colourful.  She has created the file so that it can be printed double sided without cutting the text part of the lesson off with the lapbooking pieces.

New Little Lesson on Facial Reconstruction...and Sebastian Bach?

Now for something completely new and invigorating to the brain. . .

Did you look twice at the title of this little lesson?  I did too..lol.. But we are talking science and art not vanity here. And yes, even Bach was a party to this as early scientists were called in to see if the poorly marked grave site was that of the world famous composer. It is such a neat lesson - perfect for your science loving learner. 

This little lesson was contributed by Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle, who comes up with some of the most coolio little lessons for our children.  I am so blessed to have in our lives because she comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience.  Since she has more children than I do and all of varying ages from very young to adult, she creates lessons out of necessity, but her needs are different - although we usually benefit from them in our little homeschool. :)

Today she offers a lesson that seems right off of the History channel on how forensic science has been able to reconstruct faces and features from a skull.  Facial reconstruction is part of the forensic art skills that also includes drawing and constructing faces from witness statements. Starting from the 1860s, techniques for study of the human facial form began and developed into an art form - well, almost.  As I was reading through this lesson, I especially got an out loud chuckle at Dr. Welcker's invention.  It's worth a read if you wear glasses..lol.

This lesson comes complete with text, solid illustrations, F3 style learning cards, and a chance to practice your art and drawing skills with the human form.  Great for your tween learner and up.  Such a great way to stimulate learning.

That's the beauty of homeschooling, you can choose to teach to your children's interests even if it's forensic art skills.  Remember there is an occupation out there for everyone - every job needs to be done by someone.  From the parish priest to steel detailers, graphic artists to morticians, mums to dog walkers, there is a job suited to each and every one of us.

Go Back to Schooling with a Totally Coolio Little Lesson..and Don't Forget Your Ink Pad!!!

New Little Lesson on fingerprinting will leave them shouting for more learning time - seriously!!

One of the great things about this ministry is getting to know people and the unique talents and gifts that they have to share with the world.  Today is one of those days when I am sooo excited to pass along a resource that was shared with us from Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle. 

Michelle is a wonderful mum of six children from the UK.  I love that she creates her Little Lessons for all of us to use.  My children can't wait for her new resources to arrive, especially the ones that focus on the saints or incorporate the liturgical year and, oh yes, art too!  We love that she puts so much info and time into a resource writing a full text for subjects that many wouldn't even attempt to touch - and all of this is done through the lens of the Catholic faith.  Bravo!!

Today I share, from Michelle, a wonderful 14 page Little Lesson on fingerprinting!!  Be sure to have your stamp pad handy as the children will want to examine their own fingerprints (and probably yours too!)  While you're at it you may want to have a scissors, glue stick and art supplies on hand as well because there are some really great pieces to cut out and assemble in an F3 folder, as well as some perfect notebooking sheets to add to your collection.  There are even history cards!!  Don't know anything about fingerprinting?  That's okay because she has some great text and coolio pictures as well which give samples of fingerprint details.  You could have a whole day of history, science and art fun with this set.  Here are just a few sample pages:

Printable Tales of History and Science for Older Learners

New resource for older learners who like history and science as well as the intrigue of mysteries.

Today's resource was written and contributed by Michelle Scott from Thinking Love, No Twaddle.  Granted this is not your everyday contribution for young learners, but older learners may just get inspired to learn more about Chinese History, life cycles, human anatomy, entomology, or criminal sciences.

This resource is provided in two parts.  Part one covers a historical murder during the time of China's Qing Dynasty and how justice was served due to information found in forensic entomology based on the work of Song Ci.

Part two includes more information on entomology, the study of insects, and how they can be helpful to forensic science.  She introduces such scientists as Franncesco Redi, Bergeret d’Arbois, and Hermann Reinhard.  You will also find fold able notebooking pages for Chinese forensic medicine.  Michelle has even included the answers to questions posed through out the worksheet packet.  These are very well done.

Learning more about Early Man

Here is the next set of pages in the History of Early Man resources that Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle. has been sharing with us.

This set, Children of Adam, continues on from the first set. This family discussion type lesson set includes historical reading, go along online links for further exploration of topics, art and picture study, as well as introduces readers to our Holy Father of the past, Pius XII and his work, Humani Generis. So much here and lots to learn. This is a multi-age lesson but older readers will find much to think about and ponder here.

New History and Saints Notebooking Sheets Sets

Can you tell what we are studying in our little homeschool?

So we have added new notebooking sheets this week for the following historical figures and things:

Julius Caesar
The Roman Legion
William Shakespeare
St. Bridget of Sweden

Notebooking sheets are perfect for CM style narration or even short reports.  Each of our sets is available in 4 line spacing options and gives you a selection of whether to print it out with a picture, blank with a little space to glue a picture in or with a space for drawing.  These have worked very well for us.  Our daughter fills them out and then puts each in a clear protective sheet and puts it in historical order in a large three ringed binder.  It is very encouraging for her to see all the writing that she has done

Writing Tip:  The Power of a Coloured Pen

Children can get easily discouraged in their daily work at times.  This is especially true when they are making the transition to real writing or encountering new writing styles or academic subjects.  I try to make it a policy to correct in different coloured pens.  Rather than always using red, I constantly switch the colours daily.  This small little step helps ease tender little hearts or young perfectionists when pointing out of errors in their work.  Think of Gaudete Sunday - the third Sunday of Advent - when the pink candle is lit to offer hope and excitement towards the nativity of our Lord.  Even the church knows the power of changing things up, eh? :)  Just a little tip to share.  If you have a favourite tip to share, feel free to leave a comment about it below.  We always love to hear from our online friends.

Learn about early Humanoids and other Apes

A shared resource to help introduce and teach about early Humanoids and other apes.

Today we offer a 10 page read-along resource packet created by Michelle over at Thinking Love No Twaddle that covers early humanoid or human like development and other ape like ancestors.  Many parents are uncomfortable dealing with this subject.  Some have not decided whether they want to teach using a young earth, creationist, or old earth timeline.  Michelle offers one option and covers it quite well.  You will even learn about Blessed Nicholas Steno.  Don't know who he was?  We didn't either...lol..That's the beauty of homeschooling, you can learn right along with your children.

This read aloud offers text, pictures, a few fill-ins, maps, and a comfortable tone as you read.  This introduction to this topic is just one in a series that will eventually be shared by Michelle.  We are so thankful that she is willing to share her talents with us all.
