Let This Lenten Maze Mix-up Your Mid-Week

Puzzles are a great way to learn about different subject topics while developing strategies and skills to increase one's problem-solving ability, but probably the best reason to do puzzles is because they are fun.   

For a little faith-filled mid-week fun tomorrow, why not have the kiddos give their problem-solving skills a workout with this beautiful Lenten maze that CeAnne at Sanctus Simplicitus just contributed?    This maze asks kids to help Jesus carry the cross to Easter Day. It is bright and very nice. It's just a quick way to mix up your Wednesday homeschooling lessons or CCD class!

25 Things I Learned from the Stations of the Cross and Another Lenten Resource for Children

Good Friday is one of my favorite days of the year. It is a day of sorrow, yes, but it is also the day that promises joy - that is why we call it good instead of sorrowful.  I also really like the Stations of the Cross, which focus on the events of Good Friday. 

During the season of Lent, many parishes come together weekly to reflect on the events of our Lord's Passion by praying the Way of the Cross (Stations of the Cross) devotion. By traveling along the road to Calvary with our Blessed Mother in my heart, I came to realize 25 truths of life, motherhood and love from this powerful reflective prayer. Almost every reflection can be paired with a particular station, although they are listed in random order. 

I hope you find these thoughts and reflections helpful to you in some small way.

25 Things I Learned from the Stations of the Cross

1. Always say 'thank you' when someone helps you.

2. Give of yourself even when it doesn't seem like the time or the place to do so.

3. Be willing to accept help from others.

4. Life is not fair, but God is just.

5. The cross that is carried in silence is the ultimate example of obedience and love.

6. Anyone can experience a set back.

7. God will never ask us to do anything that He, himself, has not done before us.

8. Keep trying.

9. We are more than our appearance.

10. Be willing to give everything you have in service to God.

11. Dying is a key part of eternal life.

12. God values obedience over service.

13. There is an unspeakable love between a mother and her child.

14. A Mother is called to support her child; there are some things that our children must do for themselves.

15. Mothers are made to be strong. How else could a mother witness the slow execution of her child, hold his lifeless body and then prepare it for burial.

16. Make sure you really understand what it is you are crying about or lamenting.

17. The time to help, is when you don't feel like helping.

19. When we are weary, it is time to rest, or else we will suffer even more discomfort.

22. There is peace in death. Our Blessed Mother, Mary, was glad the torturing of her Son was over.

23. Eventually, every adversity comes to an end.

25. Love should be the driving force behind obedience.

Little Lesson on the Seven Last Words

Little Lesson for mature learners is the perfect way to reflect on Jesus and learn about His seven last words.

This wonderful lesson written and created by Michelle of Thinking Love, No Twaddle blog is forty pages of reflection on Christ's seven last words during His passion and death. Created with young adults in mind, this lesson could be a very nice independent religion activity for mature learners  or it could be a reflective guided study with mom or dad.

The Seven Last Words are considered an integral part of the study of the Passion of our Lord, and are actually sentences uttered by our Lord from the cross. If you are not familiar with all the passages from our Lord, here are the seven sentences that will be focused upon in this Little Lesson.

Father Forgive them, they know not what they do.
This day you shall be with Me in Paradise.
Woman behold thy son, Son behold thy mother.
I thirst.
My God, My God why hast thou forsaken me?
It is consummated.
Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit.

Lenten Prayer Project Helps Keep Us Focused During the Season.

Use this daily Lenten Prayer Project for special intentions during the 40-day season of Lent. Intentions can be for family members, friends, your priest, ministry workers, the ill, departed loved ones, needs of the world - just about anything you feel needs specific prayer.

The project spans the entire season of Lent, however, it can be started after Ash Wednesday and used for the remaining portion of the time. It requires a special intention be picked everyday and written on the prayer pieces provided. (Drawing and affixing pictures or photographs are fine alternatives to writing as well.) Pieces are then posted on a bulletin or mantle piece, and a decade of the Rosary is prayed and offered for the specified intention. A progress chart is also included for daily use, if desired.

Expect to find in this project file a convenient instruction sheet that also reminds one how to say a decade of the Rosary, daily progress sheet and 42 prayer pieces (forty plus two spares.)

This project is simple and requires only a few minutes a day to complete; however, the rewards will be great as we help others and prepare our hearts for our Lord's Resurrection.

Praying and learning the Stations of the Cross is an easy way to keep focused during Lent.

This Friday we will begin praying the Stations of the Cross weekly in our church, as many parishes will do. The Way of the Cross is perhaps one of the most moving prayers and I still cry every time I pray it in church. As I teach my children and those of our parish about the importance of Lent, I always rely on the Stations of the Cross to serve as a visual and prayerful representation of the season. Over the years I have created many different kinds of resources for my CCD classes as well as our little homeschool. I thought that I would share them with you to hopefully bring the richness and beauty of the season to your kiddos at home or in class.

For your convenience, you can now find all of our resources for the Stations of the Cross in one spot.  We have a reference list of the stations and visual depictions along with our lot of free printable resources.  Here are a few highlights of some of the resources.

New Notebooking Sheet Set

Find our set of twelve notebooking sheets as a general set for the Stations of the Cross.  This set comes in three layouts with four different line spacing options to meet the needs of learners of all ages. There is ample room to write, draw or write and draw.

As depicted at the top of the page, these are rich vibrant poster pages that again use the mosaics from my parish.  My photographer friend and fellow catechist, Lil, took these great shots knowing that we were going to use them to help in the catechises of young hearts and minds.  Once laminated, these are great around the classroom or even down the hallway of the family home.  This is a larger file, but so beautiful.

New Awesome Lenten Little Lesson - Includes Everything You Need For Meaningful Learning Fun

Help prepare for Lent and Easter with this Beautiful 72 Page Little Lesson on the Via Dolorosa

We are beginning to think about Lent in our little homeschool.  We are taking stock of the Lenten resources we have to share with you, including meatless and yummy recipes that we will begin sharing shortly on our recipe blog.  But we are so excited to share today's resource with you all.  It is a wonderful Little Lesson on the Via Dolorosa or Road of Sorrows created by Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle.  You'll want to make sure that you put this into your lesson planning.

This Little Lesson isn't little at all - it's 72 pages!!  Michelle has lovingly written some beautiful text about the Sorrows surrounding the life and death of our Lord as well as details of specifically Lent, Holy Week and the Passion of our Lord.  I especially like that she takes Holy Week day by day in her lesson, but also that she has thought to include a bit of everything you would want to help learn about the richness of this upcoming season.  Here is a bit of what she has included:  background and explanatory text covering Lent, Holy Week, Palm Sunday, Stations of the Cross, The Seven Last Words and more;  beautiful classic art depicting and reinforcing important events, history pieces, F3 (lapbook style) pieces, scripture references, notebooking sheets, copywork prompts and opportunities for discussion and prayer.  Plus she has left some pages blank so that this can be printed back to back, allowing for activity pieces to be cut out without wrecking the text.  Oh, this is such a little gem!  Here are just a few sample pages:
