More add-ons for Our Virtue Lesson on Modesty and others

More goodies to bring Our Virtue Lessons to life

We are still updating and adding NEW resources to our current selection of Our Virtue Lessons.  Today we offer a few new things which we are making available to all of our current and future lessons very shortly.  Actually many lessons have been partially updated already. :)  Here are the new additions.

We now offer a Virtue Themed Reading Log Bookmark to help children track their reading of books related to the current virtue.  Children write in the date, title, and author of their current reads and use the bookmark to keep their reading spot warm and cozy.  Each bookmark is unique to the virtue they represent.  Simply print out, cut, fold and glue.  These go very well with our reading suggestions for each virtue.

The next goodie is a F3 piece for Bible scripture work in the form of a 4 tabbed booklet that is perfect for scripture based copywork or narration.  These resources are also virtue specific and a neat little accompaniment for this study.  These little pieces can be stapled or laid out (as at left) for lift able flaps.  The graphics help remind children of different ways to practice the virtue.  Each of Our Virtue Lessons provides scripture suggestions for children of varying ages.  These are perfect as a stand alone booklet or glued onto cardstock, into a notebook or folder.

The last thing we have just begun adding to our virtues is an Achievement Certificate.  Currently only Modesty has it, but the rest are on the way shortly.  We thought it would be a nice way to finish off each lesson undertaken with these bright colourful, fun half-sheet certificates.  They are available in one or two per sheet.

Many of our lessons already have bookmarks, F3 Pieces or other add-ons.  You will find them at the bottom of the lesson pages.  Please visit us again very soon or subscribe to our feed to find out when all of the lessons have been updated.  We hope that these little additions help to make your lessons more engaging, fun, and faith-filled.

Dr. Virtue's Literary Check-up Discussion Cards

Cute discussion cards to help kids make connections between virtues and literature.

Purposeful reading can make learning easier and more rewarding.  Many times we read books for different purposes.  We read to entertain, to relax, to educate ourselves, to find particular information and so forth.  Children must also come to know that they can read for different reasons as well.  This can, at times, help them to read more carefully and pay attention to details in characterization, plot, etc.  In the case of our book suggestions for Our Virtue Lessons, we have offered a light list of books that spans different age groups that some how relate to the intended virtue.  Sometimes the books serve to show good examples of virtuous living and at other times they serve to illustrate poor examples that we should try avoid imitating in our own lives.  Our goal was to have our children be able to recognize good and poor examples of virtuous living in all of the books they read not only those we suggest.

We wanted to provide a fun resource that could challenge children to figure out the connections between the literature selected and the virtue they were studying.  We created Dr. Virtue's Literary Check-up cards, a simple printable discussion card set that asks children to give each book "a once over check-up" looking for key information that applies to their virtue lessons.  This set can accompany any of Our Virtue Lessons and helps children find and make connections between virtues and the books they read.  We ask questions such as:
  • Who is your favourite character in this book? Why?
  • How could you change this story to make it more faith-filled?
  • Who is the most virtuous character in this story?
  • Does this story glorify God in some way?
  • What things does the main character do or say that illustrates this virtues in some way?
  • What is your favourite part of this story?
There are eighteen cards in all that can be used with virtue study or with any book or literary discussion.

To use this resource, simply print it out and cut apart on the lines.  Laminate pieces for durability and longevity.  Turn cards face down and have the children take turns picking and answering the cards.

We hope this helps extend the joy of your reading time and bring more meaning to the books you share with your children.

Modesty Definition F3 Piece

Flip, Flap, and Fold the fun in learning about Modesty

Most children love cutting and pasting.  And it's almost something you many never outgrown - just ask the scrapbookers, eh?  We hope the love of working with paper will call to the hearts of children to really internalize the study of the virtue of modesty.  Today we offer a four-flap square F3 piece on the definition of modesty which asks the question:  In what ways can I show modesty?

To use this resource, simply print out the file and follow the directions for cutting and assembling the piece.  Cut apart on lines.  Fold flaps to centre with graphics facing up.  Glue or write the definition in the centre square.  Discuss the flaps as you review the project with your learners.

You will need glue as well.  Younger learners may need some help with this F3 piece, but all in all it's pretty simple to create and all the components are one one sheet. Finished products can be glued into a notebook, manila folder, stored in small catalogue envelopes, added to another project or glued onto card stock.

We hope you find this activity useful and fun.

Modesty Lesson Go-along - F3 piece - What Shall I Wear?

More resources to go along with Our Virtue Lesson on Modesty and still more to come!

Our Virtue Lessons are some of our most popular resources.  Many families drop us notes to let us know that they need, use, and love these lessons!!  Hooray for virtuous living!!  So inspired by a nice e-mail we received this past week, we decided to revisit the virtue of modesty in our own little homeschool and create some new resources to really have fun.  Join us everyday this week as we share new go along resources for Our Virtue Lesson on Modesty.  Let the fun in learning begin.

Today we offer a new F3 piece called What Shall I Wear?  This piece is designed to help children learn about appropriate dress to various places or when participating in various activities.

This simple two page resource comes ready to go with instructions and requires a brad to complete it.  Children simply answer the question of "What Shall I Wear?" to church, to the beach, to a restaurant, to walk in the rain, to rake the leaves, to go to bed, and to play in the snow.  They can answer in words, phrases, or pictures.  This activity can serve as a wonderful catalyst for discussion of appropriate clothing.  It also allows parents to see what their children view as the norm of modern fashion, the examples of dress they choose to imitate, and so forth.  The door is opened for talking about modesty in swim wear and dressing to visit our Lord's house.  Glue the final piece into a notebook, folder or onto card stock and then hole punch an put it into a 3-ring binder.  (We put ours into our F3 folder which we hope to be able to share with you shortly.  We will include instructions on how to create your own F3 Folders for any project you may want.)

This F3 piece is a fun activity that can be used by any age.  Some children may choose to draw very detailed versions of themselves dressed in outfits, others just draw the outfits themselves or individual articles of clothing.  For the very young, this may be a great opportunity to talk about dressing for different seasons.

We hope you find this resource joyfully useful.

New Virtue Lesson on Modesty

It's taken a while, but Our Virtue Lesson on Modesty is up and ready to go!

We joyfully offer today's resources which help to promote virtuous living in our children.  Our beloved pastor constantly reminds us about the need for virtuous living in adults but also in children.  It is important for kids to know what is expected of them as Catholics, but it is also so important to give them the tools that they need to meet those expectations.  We hope that Our Virtue Lessons help parents with this sometimes challenging but always rewarding task.

Our newest lesson highlights the virtue of Modesty. This new lesson defines modesty very simply in a way that children (and adults too :) can understand its importance.  We focus on the respect for one's body, skills and thoughts.  This little unit also provides both positive and negative examples of modesty so that children can recognize both good and poor behaviour in themselves and others.  By recognizing the proper behaviour becoming of God's children, they will know how to emulate it and who may serve them as a good example to imitate.  This is so important in a world that seems to draw people farther and farther away from the Lord with it's materialism, self-centeredness and misplaced interests.

We hope you find this lesson fun and helpful - a little spot of brightness in your homeschool day.  We've included the following resources in this lesson:

  • Definition sheets with a cut and paste sheet
  • Printable prayer reminder card
  • Example of good and poor behaviour sheet
  • Incentive Chart
  • Discussion questions
  • Mini reminder posters
  • Aesop's fables to help illustrate virtuous behaviour in a printable, online and audio version
  • Matching trace copywork for the fables in both print and cursive
  • Aesop's Fables Montessori cards
  • Bible scripture references for discussion
  • Worksheets
  • Modesty craft project featuring the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • Resources for the study of a few saints associated with Modesty
  • Printable reading log bookmark
  • Printable Achievement Certificate
  • Reading list and more.

Stop by and have a look.  Feel free to drop us a line if you find these lessons helpful for you and your children.  We look forward to adding another virtue shortly.

New Worksheets for Our Virtue Lessons :)

We have added new worksheets to all of our current Our Virtue Lessons
One of our favourite resource offerings on our website are Our Virtue Lessons.  These are our flagship lessons started it all as we couldn't find good, cute, fun, and Catholic learning resources to cultivate morality in a practical sense.  So, out of necessity (there is that idea again.."out of necessity") we started to create our own lessons.  Teaching children about virtuous living should be at the forefront of every Christian homeschooler's curriculum plans.  We created these cute, fun, and dare we say.."cool" resources to help kids learn about how we should live to glorify our Lord one day at a time.

If you have never explored Our Virtue Lessons, take a peek and see how they work.  We think you will be surprised at the fun you and your child can have.  And yes, it really is all free for personal use and such.  Lessons include: learning sheets, posters, printable virtue cards, scripture work, reading lessons and book suggestions, discussion activities, copywork, learning extensions, and more.  We currently offer lessons on consideration, courage, determination, joyfulness, love, thankfulness, responsibility, and kindness.

PLUS... we are excited to announce that we will be uploading a brand new Virtue Lesson on Monday!!

Life of Christ Notebooking Sheets Pt.II - All Sets Available in English and in Spanish!!

All the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline notebooking sheets are up and ready to go in both English and Spanish!

By the grace of God, I had a patch of time last evening to work a bit on more notebooking sheets to go with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline.  My youngest changed her mind an decided to use the notebooking sheets instead requesting the mini-books so that gave me a bit more work time.  Perhaps at some point I will get to them.  Our house rule is generally that we make resources for our own needs and then share them with others.  Occasionally someone will request something and we try to help out if we can.  Thus was the case with the Spanish resources.  Xhonane over at Familia Catolica  offered to translate the resources and then I reworked them.  Thus we now have the timeline, timeline pieces and now notebooking sheets to go along with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline in both English and Spanish.  Thanks, Xhonane.  You will find the Spanish links in red.

Our ministry is about helping homeschooling families worldwide teach about the Catholic faith in a direct answer to the late Pope John Paul II's call for parents to be the first teachers of their children.  As we are just a homeschooling family ourselves running our website in our spare time and out of our own pocket, we appreciate the prayers, positive feedback, and donations of any kind that people share with us.

If you find that you like our resources or find them useful, why not help other homeschoolers find them as well?  It's easy to help us spread the word:  share us on listservs, blogs, Facebook or Twitter.  Consider adding one of our website buttons or blog buttons to your site.  Won't you please help us get the word out?  :)

Life of Jesus Christ Notebooking Sheets - Part I.

Notebooking Sheets to Go along with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline

Everyone in our house was excited about the Life of Jesus Time Line.  After we assembled and started using our timeline, We began reading and narrating the Knecht book at the breakfast table for the sake our littlest.  Our oldest needed more meat in the readings and so we began finding the passages in the Douay Rheims, which is our favourite version of the Bible - Yeah, St. Jerome!!  This gave way in a very natural progression to the question, "Mom, do we have any notebooking sheets to go with this?" Needless to say, we didn't have any, but we do now. :)

You can find now find notebooking sets that go with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline project.  Each set is now offered as just one file with 12 page options per file to accommodate writers from K-12.  This also keeps the web page cleaner, as long as the files are not too big to download at once.  (Big files strain our bandwidth and yours too.)   We have almost half of them done right now in English (thus Part I. in the post title).  We are still working on the rest of the set but we thought we had better post what we have so far so that folks could get started.  There are a few extra event sheets on the web page that are not in the timeline project itself because we had already used them previously for our studies.  You will find that the pictures on the notebooking sets match the timeline pictures to help you keep organized.

We hope to have the rest of the sets done over the next week.  We are planning to try and make a Spanish counterpart at some point as well but I know I won't be able to get to that right away yet.

BTW - I don't need to tell you that the youngest asked me after seeing the notebooking sheets, "Mom, do you have My Mini-books too?"  Yikes!!  So I guess those will also be on the way as well shortly.

Please continue to pray for us in our ministry efforts to serve more families worldwide.

Teaching Catechism Using Math, Dictation, and Art - Really :)

Teach the truth's of the Catholic Faith using math facts, dictation or copywork and art

Inspired by our faith and our children's love of drawing, we created this resource that can help children of different age levels begin to learn the unique and rich details of our Catholic faith while reinforcing simple math facts, practicing dictation skills (or copywork if you or your learner don't use this skill yet) and honing drawing skills.

Here is how this resource works.  Print out the sheets needed.  There should be one sheet used daily. You may choose to use a plain notebook instead of our sheets and that's perfectly fine.  (See same at left.)  Just use a ruler to create the margins needed.

Announce the number for the day.  Ask your learner if they can think of anything from their catechism knowledge that could fit the criteria.  For instance the number four could prompt - 4 authors of the Gospel, 4 marks of the Church, 4 weeks of Advent, etc.  Give leading prompts if needed. Announce the answer, read the passage and then give a short explanation of it. This is an excellent time for catechism lessons to unfold. Don’t be afraid to take some time and really explain the truth of the faith. We have purposely included some vocabulary terms with which children may not be familiar.  Read the passage again twice for dictation. Read it through once for content and then a second time for them to write it out.  You could treat this as copywork instead of dictation using a blackboard, whiteboard or other paper.

Next ask them to draw a picture that goes with the truth they just wrote down.   Lastly, ask them to either write the addition fact family for the number or the multiplication table that goes with it.

We have tried to include everything you may need to complete this activity.  This is fun and can be used as quickly or as slowly as you desire.  We have included multiple options for writers in our line spacing options.  We do this to accommodate as many learners as possible including those who are just learning to write, practicing cursive, or have trouble controlling with motor skills.

(Sample sheet from our set which includes 6 different page offerings per file)

We want all children to know and love their Catholic Faith!! :)

Life of Christ Timeline for Children

**Update** See our revised edition of our Life of Christ Timeline as well as our brand new
Life of Christ Timeline for Preschoolers. Available on our Resource DVD.

Timeline on the Life of our Lord, Jesus helps learners get to know our Saviour

As we alluded to the other day, we have finished a project that has been on my mind for over a year now.  This special resource is perfect for any Catholic learner, young or old and is the perfect compliment to New Testament Bible study or Catechism or CCD classes.  It is a simple hands-on pictorial timeline for children.  Created as a go-along resource to Child's Bible History by Rev. F.J.Knecht, D.D. (TAN Books), this new resource has been a big hit with our children.  Although you don't need to use the book to appreciate this resource, it really is such a nice concise read with very easy narration points.  There are 39 different events listed.

Assembly of this timeline is easy.  Print out all files using standard size 8.5"x11" paper.  You can use either heavy bond or regular bond paper.  Cut out timeline pieces, arrange as given in the instruction sheet.  Cut apart timeline cards.  Affix three to a line in the order that they occurred.  A space has been left at the bottom of each of the cards to write in a Bible passage from the Gospels.  This is a perfect bible activity for any aged learner.  Our first grader is very proficient in finding passages in the Bible and I teach this skill in my CCD class for Gr.2+ Sacramental prep.

Sample timeline cards

Many times children or even those new to the faith find it hard to piece together all of the events of our Lord's life.  I wanted a way to help them work through the Bible, learn about Jesus, as well as follow the Mass liturgies in a fun and hands-on way.  I think that this resource will definitely help.

I hope you find this resource helpful in your home or CCD class. :)

New Mother Goose Mini-book Unit Study

Mini-book unit study makes learning about prose OR poetry so much more fun

It finally happened, we created a My Book Mini-book Unit study on the works of Mother Goose as presented in Mother Goose in Prose by Frank L. Baum.  We began reading this collection of stories aloud during the lunch hour.  Originally, we created the Big Book of Narration for this work for our older, poetry hating, daughter..lol.  Our oldest began to fall in love with poetry as she learned about good moral behaviour and our youngest wanted to narrate something about the works too.  So, we created this Mother Goose unit study as part of our eclectic, Charlotte Mason style learning approach.

This unit study is fun because it allows children to express and tell back the details of the stories which they felt were most important.  This zipped file contains an instruction sheet, all of the 22 My Book Mini-books, the matching My Book Keepsake Pages as well as colourful matching cover.  The books are not prompted so that younger children may draw more than they write and older learners may write more than they draw.  Also if you do not have the book mentioned above by Frank L. Baum, you can simply use the rhymes as the catalyst for writing narrations or as little copywork books.

If you like this CM inspired style of narrative learning, you may want to try one of our other My Book Unit Studies on various topics including the saints, the human body and more.

New Science Detective Sheet for Kids

Learning about land animals just got an even bigger smile. :)

Many homeschool moms and teachers have commented about how much they like our Science Detective sheets. They are bright, colourful, and very engaging for many different aged children. We currently offer a Plant Science Detective, Aquatic Animal Science Detective, and a Jr. Ocean Animal Detective Sheet for slightly younger learners. We have now added another Detective to the scene . . . The Land Animal Detective!

This sheet is fun and easy to use for any land animal. Basic information is required of learners which could be found in almost any good animal reference book or encyclopedia. We have designed this sheet, like our other science worksheet resources, to be used with almost any resource you may have on hand at home or can acquire from your library or online.

Sheets require a picture of the animal which can be either drawn in or pasted in, basic size info as well as info about eating habits, habitats, and more. Our kids really love using these sheets. We hope yours will too!

New Big Books for Narration Including Planning Sheets

Recall, Create, and Learn

As we slowly transition and update the resources from our blog to our website, we are excited to say that we have just updated our website to include our new collection of Big Book of Narration.  There are currently nine titles to choose from including such authors as Robert Louis Stevenson, Thornton Burgess, Hugh Lofting, and more.

Along with the narration books we have also tried to include a planning or progress sheet for almost each title.  This has proven helpful for our children.  They can check off chapters that they have read, narrated or completed and see and track their progress.  There is a space at the top for a reading schedule to be written in (i.e. read one chapter a week, read one chapter twice a week, read a chapter once every two weeks).  Whether you read and narrate or just read and orally discuss chapters, there is a space to accommodate you.  Just check the boxes that apply.

We have included the sheets in an effort to help create more independent but organized learning.  This is working marvelously for us and we hope it can help you too somehow.  Stop by and take a peek.  Please feel free to share this link with other homeschoolers who use literature based learning, who follow a Classical Style, or who subscribe to the Charlotte Mason method of learning.

Many more titles are in the works and will be posted as we finish up books in our little homeschool and move onto more reads ourselves.

Famous Mathematicians Timeline and Pieces

Learn about famous mathematicians in a fun and interactive way.

I came across a dime store find of a book called Historical Connections in Mathematics, Resources for Using History of Mathematics in the Classroom by Wilbert and Luetta Reimer.  Great find!!  It has colouring biography sheets, biography read aloud pages, and cool math activities.  I was so inspired by the fun possibilities for math that we made the book part of our learning year.  We then found the book, Mathematicians Are People, Too, Stories from the Lives of Great Mathematicians by the same authors at the library.  This book is perfect for Charlotte Mason narration! :)  Our daughter loved it and we decided to buy a copy for ourselves.  I began merging the two books for organizational purposes and came up with the the idea for a mini timeline for mathematicians.

We will be adding go-along notebooking sheets to the website shortly to go with this year-long project.  We'll read the books one biographical focus at a time, do some activities for each, finish up with a notebooking page, and then put the corresponding timeline piece on the wall.

The time line is fast and easy to assemble and is made for small spaces.  (The picture at the left is a quick preview.)  You can use regular 8.5"x11" paper, although we recommend heavier bond paper for longevity.  Full instructions are included in the file.

Print out the pieces in one file - there 18 scholars in all.  Print out the time line in the other file.  The cards could also be used separately for Montessori purposes or for card play.  Just print out two sets for Go Fish and Concentration Matching Type games.

We hope you find this useful.  We will also have a similar timeline for The Life of Jesus Christ coming out very shortly.  Just finishing up the last few pieces.  It is the perfect companion to Child's Bible History by Knecht.

New Printable Friend Cards

Help learners grasp, in a very tangible way, how God created each person to be special and unique

God made each person unique and special in their own way.  Sometimes it is difficult to illustrate to children about God's gift of diversity when you have just a few learners in your homeschool, co-op, or CCD class.  Thinking in terms of curriculum, subjects like math or social studies many times will ask learners to interview or poll ten or more people to ask simple questions like what kind of pet do you own, how many brothers do you have, etc.  It isn't always feasible in a scheduled homeschool day to call or contact five or six people to ask what their favourite food or colour might be.  So we came up with Friend Cards in an effort to meet the need for lots of learning friends in your homeschool.

Simply download the friends that you want, print out the files, and fill in the cards.  Any age could use these resources.  They are fun to complete and leave lots to the imagination.  Friends are available in over 15 different options with five different backgrounds.  We have even provided a set of friends for learners to colour in themselves or draw one of their own choosing.  A photo of a real friend could be pasted onto the card as well.  Each set is available in Can/UK English or USA English.

Parents may choose to fill out the cards themselves and present it to their children completed to provide information needed to complete specific assignments.  There is ample space to add additional information to each card.

CCD USE:  As an additional activity to illustrate God's creation of man to have unique features, distinctions, and free will, these cards can prove to be a useful tool.  To use this resource in a CCD class or co-op setting, you could ask each child to fill out a card and then compare the information about each student on the board or chart paper.  This allows children to see how each person can be similar or different.  As an alternative for a really small class, you could have each child fill out a card for themselves and their best friend to have more participants and then simply compare and contrast the data.  This is also a great ice breaker activity for beginning of the year class meetings.

We hope you find these cards useful in some way.  They have come in handy for our family a few times already.

Pater Noster (Our Father) Hands-on Resources

Help learners learn the Pater Noster - Our Father in Latin

Today we offer the Little Latin Pater Noster hands-on learning fun.  Contributed by Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle, this resource is laced with fun and is as complete as it gets.  Use the sheets for a number of neat learning activities weather you are a Classical Learner, a narration lover, or CCD Catechist.

Michelle offers a few ways that this resource can be used.  She suggests that you could:

  • Print off sheets and let the child practice cursive on the grey letters.
  • Cut out the cards and get the family working out which order the Latin ones go in and which English ones go alongside in a matching play style.
  • Check out and further investigate the art and artists presented for discussion and art appreciation.
  • Make a scrapbook with construction or sugar paper (or even posh scrapbook paper) and stick the prayers in.
  • There’s a note book page for those who can write the prayer out freehand.
(Sample pages)

It is always neat and fun to see how someone could take one thing and use it in so many different ways.  Oh the joys of homeschooling!  Thanks, Michelle for helping us put the fun in learning for other Catholic homeschooling families.
